MatHolland
Well I had got a hole in my radiator, and bought one from a member on here. I was also getting water on my left cylinder because it was smoking real bad all of a suddon on the left side. So i buy this radiator, and buy a new head gasket. I get the head gasket in today, and start tearing her apart. I get the head off and I was checking my pistons out because I had just got this bike. Well, the left side ware nice and tight when it was all of the way up...The right side however had play in it from left to right, and up to down. Not sure if it just needs rings, or what. I haven't got that far yet. So more than likely she is going to get new set of piston's and new set of rings. (unless the right side just needs rings) So what should I bore it too? I was wanting to get the cool head with 20cc domes, i got toomy t6 exhaust, k&n pods, and the timing plate i ordered to make my timing +4 should be here today or tomorrow. I am wanting to use the stock crank as well
J-Madd
Torque the head back down and do a compression test. If that shows low (< ~105 or so psi, depending on elevation)you can just hone it and install new pistons and rings. I wouldn't bore it unless the is damage to the cylinder. MatHolland
Should I get piston and rings for both sides, or just the one if it needs it?
J-Madd
I always replace both unless they are fresh pistons and I manage to grenade just one of them. It sounds like there are more than a few hours of run time on this engine. If and when you need to replace a piston, go ahead and replace both. AKheathen
it may also be coolant gumming up the left rings making it feel tight, in which case, i would still at least be doing rings. what do you mean by up and down? rocking, front to back, or you can move the piston up and down in the bore? either way, you should pull the juggs and check out condition and clearances. PassionRE
Only bore if needed, no need to waste bore sizes. Have the cylinders measured first to ck clearance. If the motor got pretty hot, just plan on a set of Wiseco pistons of the correct size. If your 02 hasnt been apart ever, or in the last couple of years, have the crank trued and welded and replace all the oil seals. Make certain to check the outer bearings while your at it. Youll be fresh to go for a few years if no mishaps come your way...Jim Edited December 24, 2009 by PassionRE
