shame on me

Recommended Posts

well guys i just received my set of old school PT high rev pipes and their beautiful. They also have some carbon build up around the cylinder area ( where the pipes go in the motor) which i think might be the problem, first of all any suggestions on how to get that carbon build up out? and the mid pipes dont quite seem to fit?? What i mean is that the frame from the a-arms i kinda stopping them from getting in, but then again, the dont fully go on the cylinder hole, any suggestions on that? Ill post some pics of them later, thanks in advance

Stick a shit load of oven cleaner inside the pipes then plug the ends and shake it all around for a lil while and let sit for a half hour to an hour. Then shake it again and unplug and drain then rinse with water. Try your darnedest to not get it on the outside of the pipes.

Lightly grease/lube up the o-rings at the bottom of the pipes with your finger, any kind is fine. Then stick the pipes on the exhaust port opening and wiggle them around till they go on as much as you can, ( yes you will need some muscles some times as some are stubborn as all hell) then grab your springs and stick them on. I stick them on the motor side first then i use needle nose vise grips to stretch them and get them on the pipe tabs (yes theres a lil tool for this but why waist $10 on one when needle nose pliers work good). You should Have to force them on and they Should be a bitch to get the springs on, harder to get on the better, so that will snug the pipes up to the cyl fully. If your springs go on real easy, then there too worn out, so get 4 new springs, there cheep. Also if the o-rings are worn, cracked or have a decent flat spot, replace them now since there off, then they wont leak. Again there cheep.

Just twist and turn the pipes every which way till you find the way they go in from the side, every style of pipes kinda go in diff,. They will go, just you will find the way by turning and twisting them around till they go.

After that the stinger tubes will line up good.

the shame on me part, is because, after i posted this post, i went down stairs to try and get them on. SAD thing they dont fit. Since they are the old school PT's unfortunatly they are for the j-arm frame, which means im fucked. I got the a-arm frame so that is what is stopping them from getting in. I will try tomorrow, to get them in by unscrewing the engine, and lifting the front side of the engine up, and that will hopefully allow the pipes to go in.... And when i let the engine down, hope fully that will trap them in and i can bolt them in. So anyone got anybetter ideas?? i love these pipes, and i really want to see em bolted in. BTW im going to see a 87' banshee this weeked, which is with the j-arm frame. My dad apparantly wants a shee now, so we found this 87 for a good price. but is still want to bolt these pipes on mine, and help would greatly be appreciated... banghead

As Savage said, try a little more to get them on. Sometimes turning the handlebars is all it takes. If need be, pop the a-arms loose. Could be as your saying, though, with them being built for J-Arm frames, IDK. From experience with other manufacturers, they waste no room and install is often difficult.

As far as cleaning the pipes, do as Savage recommended but throw a handful of stainless nuts and/or bolts in with the mix; just make sure you get them all out!!

I didn't know PTR changed their design between the J-arm and A-arm frames. Iv never heard that before. Where did you get that info from ? Has anyone else here at bhq heard of that ?

They didn't. There the same, just like i said 50 times to him, hes not doing it correct..hell its not even hitting the upper a-arm even close anyways.....I would get them in in 10 mins as could other peeps. I got a $100 on it. If they did change anything, its nothing extreme to not let them fit ALL banshees.......

I gave up an hour ago trying to help in the shouter. If all else fails it's BFH time. lol2.gif J/K

Have you tried the 'freeze-butter method' ? When I installed my PTR mids I had the same problems. What ya have to do is put the pipes in your freezer, this will shrink down the pipe ever-so-slightly. Keep the pipes in the freezer overnight. Now get a stick of butter ready and as soon as they come out of the freezer rub the butter all over on the pipe. Have your quad standing in the wheelie position when you go to install the pipes, it makes it a lot easier. The combination of the frozen\shrunken pipe molecules, the butter and standing the bike vertical will make the job easier. Sometimes PTR's fit right in, but sometimes they don't, and thats when the freeze-butter method comes in handy. Good luck and take some pictures of the process.

forget to add.... rub the frame rails down with the butter too.
