The washer from the OEM is a conular spring washer or also called a Belleville washer to help retain the nut. Many guys will put a type of thread locker on the threads and use a standard flat washer in a pinch and we have never had any problems with this method. Koolguyson
Whether you use a flat washer (which I don't recommend) or the conacal washer...use red loctite. I have had that nut come loose and fly through my side cover (and that was with loctite). It is never pretty...
bansheesandrider
Use the proper washer and nut. Use Loctite and torque the nut to the correct spec WITH A QUALITY TORQUE WRENCH and you should never have problems with the nut comming off. Guys that use an impact wrench don't really know how tight they are getting the nut, sometimes it is not tight enough and sometimes it is overtightened and damages the nut and/or the crank.
