bunga's
i have a basicly standard banshee. the other day i was cruising along and it started spluttering and surged a few times before it stopped. i thought shit fuel from the shop here. i got it to start again rode it onto the trailer(it wouldnt go more than an idle at this point) and took it to yamaha shop. they gave me a story about we need to clean and tune the carbs for me. so ok. they did that and when i came to get it he said theres no spark. he proceeded to charge me 700 bucks for carb clean and tune"how do you tune it with no spark"sigh, i have been over it 10 times with a multi meter and i cant find the problem. wire harness is ok new coil new leads new plugs, has a good stator coil flywheel pickup seems ok but it reads good for continuity. im stumped any ideas?does the brain box under the seat die? im too scared to take it to the shop again, the idiots didnt even have a qualified tec there. hopeing the way it died is a indicator.i need it to go, 7 months without the rush and hanging my head out the car window isnt cutting it. oh if i kick it the lights on the front wont glow either. dead as a moggot Edited September 22, 2009 by bunga's
black sunshine
$700, OUCH!! That's one for the record books.... You could have changed out the entire electrical system cheaper. See if you can get your hands on a "known working" CDI box, swap it and see if that fixes anything. Spark lost on both sides? What year is it? Still have the TORS system? Edited September 22, 2009 by black sunshine

coronakidd
when you gas wide open throttle does it sputter or does it die sputtering had one that the pick-up on the coil was coming loose from mount and got to far away from flywheel when you checked the coil it checked good just to far away from fly wheel to pick-up a reading also you could have condensation build up if youve unplugged the torrs or cut any wires and black taped them
black sunshine
An impact wrench is your best bet for the flywheel nut AND the puller that you will need to get the flywheel off. Don't try to pull the flywheel with a 3-jaw. Make sure to use an impact or a torque wrench and an extra set of hands to put it back on. I've had them come loose before upon start up, not cool! Mjv420
I would start with troubleshooting the stator. Like sunshine said do not use a 3-jaw puller, you will most likely mushroom the head of the crankshaft stud.
KlotzBanshee
If you know of any one else willing to pay him 700 bucks to clean their carbs...send them to me, I'll clean and jet them for $500 Hell, I'll even throw in free shipping! Rodneya
Check the key and kill switch first before you start ripping stuff apart
black sunshine
Check with Jeff@FAST for the puller. It is under $20 and well worth it. Probably only be $50 or so for shipping to you...
spurdy
Check with Jeff@FAST for the puller. It is under $20 and well worth it. Probably only be $50 or so for shipping to you... He needs to hold the flywheel to get the flywheel nut off first. Best way is a flywheel clamp. Its a set of vise grips with 1 pin on each lever. The pins go into the holes on your flywheel and basically gives you a long handle attached to your flywheel. If you don't have that an impact will spin it off easily. Next, I would try a large pair of channellocks (460 pair) and hold onto the flange that the flywheel is riveted to. Don't hold onto the outside diameter of the flywheel as you could mess up the pick up flags, or damage the magnets inside by squeezing on it. black sunshine
If you are careful to mind the pickup on the flywheel you could use an oil filter wrench, also.
AKheathen
put it in gear. you can use an impact driver which is 10-15 from harbor freight or online. i know rmatv has one. part # 1145050001. or, you can use a breaker bar and smack it with a hammer while holding pressure to unscrew it. if your stator ohms out within specs on the lighting, ignition, and pickup, and you aren't lighting up a bulb tester on either coil, then it's most likely the flywheel. if you need the puller asap, yamaha has them in stock and it fits other yamaha flywheels as well as some other makes. do you have the ohm specs? doorslammer
hey buddy where abouts are you, im in wickham and have a flywheel puller you can borrow. no lights or anything sounds like the stator has crapped itself.
dajogejr
I only kinda parsed this thread, so if it's been covered, forgive me. First...unplug the tors. The wire at the clutch perch, the throttle, the carb tops and the black box under the gas tank. Disconnect all that shit. Second, just because a stator won't light a bulb does not mean it won't spark to the plug. The ignition and lighting side of the stator are separate. To me it sounds like a bad stator or a faulty ground or kill switch.
