yfz conversion issues

goatbanshee

Recommended Posts

Hey, Has anyone had any luck with this steering issue yet? I just did the conversion and all is good except the shocks rub the back of the upper a-arms, but I think I can fix that. But the biggest problem is the steering. The banshee handles great, but its super hard to steer. The only thing I can think of so far is maybe I my shocks are too long. I am running ltr450 shocks and I have not adjusted them down yet so it seems its pushing the a-arms down too much and it puts the ball joints at a funny angle. Any advise helps thanks.

I have not done this swap yet I want to,......but from what I have seen:

1 - The 450 frame is narrower in the front putting the A-arm pivots closer together.

2 - The 450 front end has a bit more rake to it than the Banshee.

3 - When doing this swap, it puts the lower shock mount out further than standard Banshee shock mounts which in turn lays your shock down a bit, which I don't think is the greatest idea either.

I think if someone was willing to hack up a Banshee frame to make the mounting points near the same as the 450 the swap would probably work OK, I plan on trying it with my extra roller at some point.

To just stick the arms on and start swapping the tops from side to side is just kinda dumb !!

So IMO modify the Banshee frame to put things back in their correct geometry then come post the handling and steering results.

Well, after lots of thought and starring it come down to this. the yfz 450 arm are not made for a banshee!!!!! problems can vary from person to person doing these mods I know its pretty straight forward but when you try to swap parts from atv to atv and there not the same atv you going to have problems, especially if you are using used parts that are a little bent. (learned this the hard way) Anyway, I noticed when I was putting on the yfz spindles the ball joint bind up pretty good when you turn so thats my guess as to why it steers hard. I put my banshee spindles on the yfz a-arms and no binding, the upper ball joint it at a pretty extreme angle but it does not steer hard any more!! (WEIRD) It is still a little stiffer then stock but it is actually drivable and handles a lot better. that being said I would like to buy some a-arms that are made for a banshee someday but the yfz a-arms look so cool.

Are you guys running the dust caps on the lower A arms? I am in the process of doing the conversion and I have removed material up to the welds but still can't fit with both caps installed. What would be the harm in leaving them off the outside caps, the brackets should keep the bushing from coming out right?

I just did mine with this last build. So far I really like it. the suspension through the whoops is awesome. As for turning not bad except when comming out of tree shots in the soft sand. She pushes hard. But yes It does look badass.
