Cylinder Head stud stripped

Recommended Posts

I bought a nice set of cylinders a few weeks ago, Installed them and while torquing down the head to 20lbs the front stud kept spinning, so i took the stud out and the stud hole in the cylinder is stripped. So my question is How am i gonna fix this now? So im kinda at a loss, anyone have an idea how or where to have it repaired?

Helicoil it...cost you like 10 bux for the helicoil at any auto parts store.

Just bring the stud with you to the counter and get them to match it up to a helicoil. If you need a new stud to no big deal.

So easy a cave man can do it.

Or if you don't really have confidence doing it. Any machine shop will do it quick and easy for you.

A helicoil will work but a better thread repair is a "keensert" . A helicoil will take a special tap for the outside thread of the helicoil. The pitch is the same but the diameter is bigger. A keensert will use a standard metric tap for the outside diameter and pitch. The keensert is a solid threaded unit as opposed to a helicoil which is more like a spring.

Both will work, just the keensert is strong and more of an industrial type repair.
