4 mill will not shift

Recommended Posts

So everyone that does a 4mill have to have a override? This is my 1st 4 mill, drag ported by FAST and i cant shift under load at ALL, almost have to completly unload the tranny before itll shift past 3rd.....but everything inside is still stock, star, shift shaft etc....I do have the fast clutches and a d-d lockup though. would moding the shift shaft and getting a modded star help? I really dont want to go the dunable route but if I have to I have to......i race mostly 300ft dirt but i do like to still be able to play when i want, alot of open fields here.....I know alot of yall will say just get a duneable but my funds are kinda tight now, im going to have to send motor off to get this knocking sound figured out.....4 tear downs and still cant find what it is...... *cries*

I am running a 4 mil from HJR with a DD clutch and no override. I have some work done to the gears, shift shaft and shift drum on bearings and I have no trouble shifting. Doesn't shift like an override under load but I can shift without the clutch 90% of the time.

Side cut your gears, put the drum on bearings, shift star mod, roller bearing from cascade and you would have a good start. If you take some time and study the shift drum you can round some edges and put some different tapers in the tracks the forks ride in and make it shift even better. Then once you've done that you can play around with some different springs between the cases and forks and use spring tension to help the trans shift even more smoothly.

Yea but wouldnt having all that done cost about the same as a 1-5 dunable? I know nothing about the tranny, so I'd have to let someone else do it I just did my first complete teardown to put in the 4mill and now I have a knocking sound, so my confidence is kinda down at the moment..... squish piston to bore clearance and everything is a-ok.....still knocks, but the knock fades in and out, really notcible at idlegive it just a little gas and you cant hear it

did you check the cushions in the clutch basket?

grab the basket infront of the gear and try and turn it back and forth... if the basket turns and the gear does not... then the cushions are shot... I had a bike I could not find a knock noise and thats what it ended up being....

as far as the tranny goes, the shift star mod, shaft mod, and easy shift spring help.... but it still does not make it great...

I have heard some people cutting every other "dog" off the tranny gears to help it shift better but I have never rode a bike with said mod....

go with a duneable override. you can drag it and still play ride it. if i had a trail banshee i wouldnt ride without a duneable.

wow, on a trail bike? so basically you can still trail ride it but not suppose to backload it right?

But yea my basket does turn quite a bit without the gear moving, i asked about that in another thread..... so i guess i get to piss the wifey off even more.....sighs billet basket time hahaha

i beat the hell out of my duneable on my 10mm cub. i can upshift under full power smooth as butter.. i can downshift with or without the clutch at any speed. ive never had an issue.
