Hinson Clutch Question

Recommended Posts

The banshee I just got has a full 8 plate hinson clutch in it, and I can not for the life of me get it adjusted... I have tried and everything you go to put the bike in gear with the cluch in it tries to move forward (like the clutch isnt engauged)... Is this common with this clutch? Bigred and I are thinking that maybe the adjuster in the clutch isnt long enough... Any suggestions?

Kiel.. I know you know know what your doing in there so I'll skip the stupid stuff.

If all clutch components are good/new. Best way I adjust my clutch is.. Turn the adjuster in until it touches.. then back off about 1/8-1/16 of a turn. Can't always go by the arrows. I try to use a thinner oil.. My opinion is that it pentrates the plates easier. Perhaps a stretched clutch cable?

Is it completely jumping into gear when you click into gear with the clutch pulled or just jumping some/alot? What does it look like when you pull the clutch handle with the clutch cover off? I'm sure you've seen enough move to know how much movement or about how much would be good.

Also the clutch arm can get quite worn where it contacts the ball/rod setup, that could lead to not pushing the plates out as far.

Ah, that damn banshee creeping. What I've done to fix that before, and again this would vary from bike to bike, but adjust the arrow on teh arm to the stator side of the case arrow. I'm really not sure if this is even right, but it seems to give more "pull" or w/e and disengages (or engages, however you prefer to say it) the clutch and spreads the plates apart more.

Kiel,

The stock adjuster and set screw should be long enough. My 8 plate worked fine with it. I was not able to use the arrows. I set my clutch like Shane said. Back the screw out so the pressure plate sits flat. Turn it in until it hits and back it off. Make sure that you are lining the dots on the inner hub and the pressure plate up when you bolt it back together. This can make everything not fit properly, especially if you

thanks for the input fellas, I will tear it apart and see if I can get it going... It doesnt creep, it jumps in gear and tries to go or just dies. I will get it going, just didnt know if there was something with the hinson shit I didnt know about...

Also one more thing I learned the hard way after getting the 8 plate. If your not running a lockup, and have just the stock cover, you need to shave the tips of the nipples off on the inside. Your pressure plate will hit these if not. I used a flat disk on my die grinder and took them down and it was good. Of course that is after my new 8 plate already dragged on it and got metal all in the oil.

Keil. I run hinsons, does the inner hub spin freeley when you tighten down the nut? Mine moved the brass bearing insert in the basket enough for the inner to lock up on it, causing the same effect youre saying. Dont know or why, it just did. Keep us informed.
