yamahaowns
Like many others i have also been having a coolant problem with my banshee. I noticed it kept leaking out of the overflow tube even without getting it hot. It wasn't bad at first but after riding for awhile i started to get puffs of smoke from the coolant spattering all over the pipes. I took some tips on the site and started it cold with the radiator cap off and it shot fluid straight out of the radiator. Does this mean i blew a head gasket? It looked like there may have been some coolant bubbling from under a head bolt? I took the head off and the gasket didn't seem to be damaged to badly. Should i buy a new one, and if so does that mean i need a new head as well or can i put the stock one back on? Also should i be adding coolant to the reservoir under the seat and the radiator? I am new to the site and new to banshees so any help would be much appreciated.
LiftdT4R
Welcome to the HQ. The coolant shouldnt have shot out of the rad if the bike was cold. If youve taken the head off you have to buy a new gasket before installing it again. I would check to make sure the head isnt warped too. You can use a straight edge and run it along the head. The tolerances are listed in the Clymer manual, or maybe someone can post them. I would also check the impeller in the water pump. A lot of time the stock plastic ones strip out and then don't circulate the coolant. An aftermarket billet aluminum one will work much much better. You may also want to check the radiator cap too. I had a bad one once and it cause the cooling system to loose presure and then the bike will overheat. Also, you shouldnt have to fill up the overflow, most people don't even run them on their bikes. Just the radiator to the cores should be fine. Good luck!!!

If there is coolant coming out of the overflow without the bike being hot then it sounds like you are pressurizing the cooling system from the motor. i.e. head gasket or something of that nature. Sounds like your on the right track. SP

Make sure all the bolts and nuts are off.
gbody
Make sure all the bolts and nuts are off. Trust me there are no bolts left on the engine except for the cyl. head bolts.
