spark plugs

i didn't do exactly a plug chop, i could see good enough inside that i was running lean so i made adjustmensts and this is what they look like after about 2hrs riding on them. just noticed on the right the outer part is completely covered w/ carbon and the one on the left is only about half. is this something to be concerned w/? what do you think as far as how they look? im running 40:1 on 93 oct.

another thing i forgot to mention was that on the one w/ all the carbon on the outer ring the center electrode was white on the top and the one w/ only half the center electrode was gray. does this also mean anything or to be concerned w/?

You cannot tell nothing by looking at those plugs. How can you determine if you have the correct main jet by looking at plugs that have been rode for 2hrs. You could have a rich needle and a lean main jet.

 

That is why you need to warm it up on old plugs and clear it out. Put new ones in and fire it up go through all the gears at WOT. Then kill it pull the clutch in and stop. Then put the old plugs back in. That way the only time that the new plugs have been run is at WOT. Then you will be able to tell if the main is the right size or not.

to answere yes new plugs & the only thing i didn't do was cut the plugs. so if you read the first post i mentioned i could see i was running lean and i made adjustments. what im asking again is if you look at the plugs there is carbon deposits on the outer ring of the threads. the one on the right has a full circle completely around it of carbon and the one on the left has only about half or so. is this telling me something still isn't right? also the one on the right the center electrode is white on the top of it and the left one was greyish, is this something to be concerned w/ also? i tried getting pics but that part didn't turn out good.

I can't tell anything by looking at those plugs.

Neither can you if you looked at them after a quick run...richened up...then didn't look at them again for a few hours.

 

Start with the main, look at the plugs after a warmed up WOT run.

 

I go by feel after that. You could be lean in one area of jetting and fat in the other...I always do mains, needle then pilots.

 

GENERALLY speaking, if the bike starts with 1 or two kicks and isn't free revving or zingy, or blubbery...the pilot/air screw are close.

omg you guys, k, am i not asking the right question or what. i want to know if there is any concern w/ the dark color which would be carbon on the bottom of the threaded part of the plug. if you looked at the plugs you can see the one on the right is completely covered and the one on the left isn't. is this anything to be concerned w/ and/or why is it like that.

You're asking the right questions, but you're not listening to the answers.

With 2 hours on plugs, you can not get an accurate reading, period.

 

The plug with half the bottom burned is how the heat range should look on a plug, but because it's dark as all hell, it could be jetted rich on one circuit and lean on another...

 

The carbs could be out of sync. One side compression could be a little higher or lower than the other.

One spark plug cap could be going bad....

One side could have an air leak....

 

There are a ton of variables...trying to read an old plug isn't going to get you anywhere is all I'm getting at.

 

Do both carbs have the same size jets and needle clip positions (don't laugh, I've seen it before)...
