rtcc
Title kind of explains it, but for you guys that ship engines all around the country what is the best way to package them up? What does it usually run to ship one? thanks
kodie
I asked this a few months ago and they told me to go buy one of those rubbermaid totes from wallmart and put it in there make a base out of a couple peices of wood to hold it still and screw the lid to the bottom of it. black sunshine
IDK what the engine alone weighs, but if you can stay under 70#(maybe it's 80#?) there is a huge difference in cost. I crated mine and it was 116#, cost me 150 to ship from MI to KS, one way It cost less to ship back($100) because builders usually ship frequently and do regular business with UPS and FEDEX. If I do it again I'm gonna try a rubbermaid tub, expanding foam, and garbage bag the engine for a custom crate.
BigRed350x
They are rather expensive, but buy a pelican case, and the padding them come with will be more than adequate. Just cut the padding to fit the engine in the center. Those cases are WAY stronger than rubbermaid. - Jared
locogato11283
fedex has always been way fuckin cheaper than ups for shipping engines. fuck ups.
BoostedRex
fedex has always been way fuckin cheaper than ups for shipping engines. fuck ups. FedEx ground is even cheaper than regular FedEx even thou the packages are all shipped together lol. But I always ship my parts in those rubbermaid totes. Ask anyone who has bought parts from me lol. donkeypuncher
fedex has always been way fuckin cheaper than ups for shipping engines. fuck ups. yeah, i work for ups and even i say their costs are high (no employee discount, yeah it's BS), so if i can help it i usually try and go with usps. i'll never go with fedex though. but for anybody that doesnt know, if you ship your stuff from a UPS center and not a UPS store its about 10-15% cheaper.
nameehsnab
Ship it in a big styrofoam cooler. Dosen't cost that much to buy and it will give your engine plenty of protection.
Koolguyson
Last one I shipped was 95 bucks and I put it in a rubbermaid container. Styrofoam on the bottom and cardboard on the sides.
wacko2000
I have shipped my motor to Jim @Passion racing 2 times. Both time i built a box, I say hell with all the other things/ideas I want my motor to be safe, I dont want it move at all and if an idiot drops it, it wont get messed up, especially after spending a shit load of money on it. If it cost you a extra 30-40 bucks its worth it. Last time i shipped it was 130.00 with 3k insurance. I built a box from 3/4 ply, bought 2 bags of the shipping peanuts. Get a old ratchet strap, screw it to the inside of the box on opposite sides. Lay down 3-4inches of peanuts on the bottom of the crate, set the motor in, lay a towel across the motor, tighten up the strap, fill the rest of the crate with peanuts and them screw the lid down. Both time Jim called me and thanked me for shipping it like this. Also i drill two holes in opposite sides of the box (4 holes total)and put rope through for handles. If you dont kno your knots just make alot of them, it will hold Im not saying that others ways wont work, I feel safer this way and Ive had no problems at all doing it this way. This was the first box: Edited June 9, 2009 by wacko2000
fastrthnu
last ones I sent where around $80. wrapped em in a hefty garbage bag, with about 2" of insul foam on the bottom and then filled the box with sinch foam and taped it up. Next day its solid and safe, surrounds the shape of the motor and is tough.

spurdy
use a milk crate like jeff posted one time that he got a motor. that was quite funny A nice sized heavy card board box is fine. The key is that the contents doesn't move around. Heat resistant plastic on top of expanding foam. Let the foam start to expand and set your motor in. Another layer of plastic and foam on top. Add foam until almost full and close the lid, tape up real good and you are good to go. Got a solid block of foam with your motor inside. Easy to open and remove the top half of the foam and the same can be used to ship it back with. Less wieght for cardboard then a crate. Mine was $75 from KS to CA. Got there and came back perfect.
