Mjv420
the thing about the firmware is like an update for the connectivity support. plus, a couple features anyone can use. i barely did anything with mine, but it was nice to unlock the router/boost signal and tweak a little, which anyone can do. the unit itself is pretty shitty in manufacturing, but i believe i remember the firmware fixing the problems like ps3 compatibility, among other things. Your right about the quality of these routers, they are junk. There are some nice features unlocked also, I especially liked the snr graph which can help you tune in wireless signals. But for the fact that he is not very experienced with setting up routers period I didn't think it would be logical for him to try to reflash the firmware as they are many different versions, etc. I have had many of these linksys routers with the dd-wrt firmware over the years. I tried dlink's gaming router and have been more than happy with it.
dajogejr
I think these routers are rock solid. I've used a bunch of them with zero issues. You can't expect Cisco quality or features from a router that costs 50 to 70 bucks.
