Dan
87 been sitting for 2 or 3 years. has had hard starting issues in past. spark used to be weak when it last ran not blue but yellow. finished removing tors with new carbs with idle screws installed and new twist throttle and non tors cable. also is there supposed to be a jumper wire for the old thumb throttle tors electrical connection was this a 2 wire connector with black and black/yelloe wires. ive been checking stuff in yamaha repair manual, everything seems to check out. is my stator bad shouldnt the lights be getting electrical during cranking? Doddy
I didn't know 87 Banshee's had TORS. I didin't jump any wires when I removed mine. Just Cut the wires going into the switch at the throttle, and unplug the TORS box which is located under the gas tank near the left fender. Could be a bad stator. 2001Stroker
You probably won't see the headlights come on just by kicking the motor over. I know I can't. I guess the stator just isn't turning over fast enough to make enough wattage. The stator has 2 outputs. 1 for lights, and 1 for ignition. I would get an ohm tester, and check the ignition side of the stator. I can't remember off the top of my head which ones to check, and how many ohms it is, but I'm sure someone will chime in. If I remember correctly, I think it's 118ohms.
Dan
k the stator seems to be checking out fine 118 ohms on one set of wires and 16 or so on the other set.
2001Stroker
What color wires did you check together?
Dan
red and green one set , and white/green + white/red
2001Stroker
I wish someone would chime in, cause I can't remember which one you check, and what ohms they're supposed to have. I wanna say the low side is supposed to have like 19-20. Don't take that as correct though.
1998BansheeHD
Set your ohmmeter to test resistance (and the correct range if you need to), and touch one test lead to the terminal on the red wire, and the other test lead on the terminal on the green wire. Your ohmmeter should read between 13.7 and 20.5 Ohms, so if it reads 15 Ohms your stator ignition coil is OK, if it reads
AKheathen
x2, the stator checks out. check the pichup gap, grounds, and ohm the coil. if you had yellow spark a few years ago, then either the coil was already going out, or a weak connection somwhere
Dan
yeah i tried adjusting pickup gap this morning i put a picture inbetween it and tightened it up didnt help. i also ohmed the coil but the positive or negative i cant remember doesnt have any reading to the plug wires. thought it was bad then read that some do that and some dont. so that doesnt make sense and i dont know if mine is bad or not
2001Stroker
Pickup gap should be between 0.018"-0.020". Pull one of the spark plugs, and put it against the head. Have a friend kick it over. It should be bright blue. If that doesn't work, try eliminating the kill switch. Take the radiator cover off, and unplug the plug going to the kill switch. Now try it. If that doesn't work, try the key switch. Unplug it, and jump the Black/White wire to the Black/Red wire. Now try it. Just curious, when's the last time you replaced the spark plugs? Dan
spark plugs are new, yeah i have a spark tester also with the clip for ground and ive tried both switches. i measured resistance on spark plug wires. the spark plug boots didnt have a reading which i thought was strange. then i tried some from my snowmobile which was running and those new ngk boots didnt have a reading for resistance either. im thinking its either the cdi or coil or a ground or bad wire somewhere Pickup gap should be between 0.018"-0.020". AKheathen
you measure from one cap to the other. you also have to have the other plug wire attatched to the installed spark plug when you are testing. those coils jump the spark from one plug to the other, instead of to ground.
