race gas vs alcohol

Recommended Posts

i am currently set up to run 110 race gas. but i am having trouble rinding it now. i was thinking about sitching to alcohol. i am not sure what all that is invloved in doing this. i know i will need bigger jets but not sure how much bigger. i currently have 380's in it. i have stock carbs on it. my moter was ported and polished by jeff. does alcohol affect how long a moter will last? one of the reasons i was thinking about switching is that it is cheaper than race gas also. i am sure there is more that i need to know about making the switch and info would be great.

run a standard plug gapped at .017

run supertechniplate or castor 927, i prefer supertechniplate

run atleast 7 degrees timing

get a pingle valve

run 5/16 fuel line

drill your gas tank cap vent hole out as big as it will go

you have to have your carbs converted to run alky, not worth it on stock carbs if you ask me

be prepared to purge your system every time you put it up for the night

I'd like to add that you burn twice as much alky as you do gas... so you might aswell times the price of alky by 2 when comparing to race fuel.

haha yeah forgot that part...

I got a great examply for ya g_low, this past weekend me and my bro went to kennedale texas to drag 1/8th mile. We took 55 gallons of alky and enough oil to mix 48 gallons. We only made 7 passes each due to rain out but we burnt 10 gallons of alky between the both of us in those 7 passes..

now dont forget we did have to warm them up and run time in between the passes but still, it goes quick.

You shouldn't have to drill the pilots. They make pilot jets for stock carbs up to a 60 or 55 I believe.

Take whatever you're running for gas now, go up 3-5 sizes on the pilots. Probably end up with a 32.5 or a 35.

I like the pilot a little rich because after a WOT run, when you cut the throttle...that fuel is the only thing cooling the piston top...less is not good.

Since Jeff built your motor, I'd ask him what size carbs to run on alky. 33 or 35PWKs converted would be my advice.

Then you should take up scrap booking...

seriously, get some 33pwks or 34pjs, converted to alky. Its fun, and you can definitely feel the seat of the pants power! Easier to jet, alky will burn well even when very rich. I ran alky for a season in my trail/dune bike and loved it. Since switched back to gas b/c i Built a drag bike for alky.

Ditch those stock carbs man, you're way past that now!

I have thought about going to alky also. What is involved in purging the fuel system and why is it necessary?

alll you need to do is run mixed gas through the engine and carb to flush out all the alcohol. If you dont the alcohol will rust all the internals because of the moisture it makes.
