DIY porting anyone out there have any luck

Recommended Posts

I got a set of stock cylinders sitin around and have been giving it some thought lately if I do it they are going on a 4mil I would like something that would tear up the trails since that is the majority of what I ride I had the great idea of going with a drag port when I put it together and if you have rode a drag ported bike on trails you know why I wanna do this lol. I am looking for specs so I know what to cut out and what not to any imput would be great

ya Im sure they are if I paid 500 bucks to have someone do the work I would hesitate in giving it away for free lol but here is a table I found on the next thread down if anyone else is interested

PORT TIMING VALUES FOR RPM RANGE.

THE FIRST DURATION IN THE XXX-XXX FORMAT IS THE MIN FOR THAT RPM.

EXAMPLE: TO GET TO 9000 RPM YOU HAVE TO HAVE AT LEAST 184 EXHAUST

AND 123 INTAKE

EXHAUST TIMING

7500 RPM 176-178

8000 RPM 180-182

8500 RPM 183-185

9000 RPM 184-186

9500 RPM 186-188

10000 RPM 190-192

10500 RPM 193-196

11000 RPM 196-198

TRANSFER TIMING

7500 RPM 120-123

8000 RPM 121-125

8500 RPM 122-126

9000 RPM 123-127

9500 RPM 124-128

10000 RPM 127-131

10500 RPM 129-133

11000 RPM 130-134

I have some porting specs that somehow I was able to talk a reputable member of Planet Sand out of back in the day. I'm getting ready to grind on a set of cylinders myself, even popped for the right angle head tool, $300+, so I need to get my money out of that. The specs I had were right around 188* exhaust duration, but I had transfer specs, boost port opening specs etc. I can't find the flippin' file that I saved on it right now, but I'm digging for it tonight. I'll see what I can find. It was for a medium aggressive "dune port" though, not full out drag. He actually even went as far as to mention areas within the transfers that I should address, just from a flow standpoint, timing aside.

His screenname was Backcountry on PS if I remember right?

Haha! Found it! This is a very old post... Surprisingly my login was still current, but found I have very little access to PS now!

Backcountry is Dan Wade from Patriot Racing. He lives about a mile from me and taught me how to port banshees.

That's right, I do remember that now. Well, I remember from back in the day when I started that post on PS, that you could tell he obviously knew his stuff!!! I had forgotten that piece of the puzzle by now. I couldn't belive he would just come out with all those specs at the time!

sounds like I should try and get ahold of him cause I have never done it before I have just been trying to find alil info that would point me in the right direction for atleast a good starting base. I know patroit does some nice work around the area I just dont want to fork out the money for the work right now

Dan definitely likes to mess with me when we go over stuff. He makes me think about the answers, he doesn't just give them up when I am over there. Out of most guys I know he is one of the cheapest. He will charge $250 for a dune port on a stock stroke motor.

you should tell him to write me up a port map for a trail/dune job on a 4mil or just see how much the job would be arent they over in Tacoma?

We live in Bonney Lake. He is not going to want and do that. He probably wont even really want to give you the specs either now. I think he would much rather have you do his cylinders for cash he could spend.
