ENGINE NOISE

Recommended Posts

i am hearing a loud rattle noise from the motor, its not coming from the topend or crank, but from the clutch cover.. i was getting metal shavings in the oil also.. i discovered that the shaft that the clutch basket rides on has a lot of end play.. you can wobble it up and down and it makes a clunking noise.. the bearing is definately loose... is this where my noise and metal shavings are coming from??? i have a hinson clutch basket also, and the cushions seem very loose also, with almost 1/4" play.. help me out here guys.. someone has surely ran into this before.

end play is usualy thought of as movement in and out not up and down.

if that shaft has in and out movement then thats ok to a certain point, if it has up and down play as you have stated then you need to pull the shaft and swap the bearing out. none of the shafts that mount side to side in the cases should have any up/down play. as to what your noise is i can only guess that it is from that bad bearing but it could be a combination of several things and the bearing is just one bad piece.

if you start poking around a little closer it should be evident where your metal shavings are coming from, just look for the piece thats realy shiney where it shouldnt be....

if you have a hinson basket and it has 1/4 inch of slop in it just pull the backing plate and install new cushions, there only $20 for upp cushions from twister...

i would like to know as well. i have a rattling sound coming from about the same area, but have never had any clue what it was. they way you describe it, sounds just like what mine sounds like. i have yet to split my cases since i got the bike, but maybe its time.

Sounds like the brass bushing that is pressed into your clutch basket has worn out. Its the softest metal in that whole region and will typically wear out before anything else. I'd bet if you pulled your pressure plate, innter hub and clutch out that you could grab the secondary drive gear on the back of the basket and try and tilt it in and out at the top and bottom it will move.

You need a new brass bushing in your basket. Call Kim at K&T. He makes a needle bearing replacement for that gay brass bushing. Works a LOT better and won't wear out like the stock bushings will.

so i took everything out down to the clutch basket to check this brass bushing you speak of. as you said, it does have some play in it when i try to tilt it back and forth. question is, is there an acceptable range of play, or should there be no play at all? it doesn't seem bad, but if replacing it with the needle bearing will fix my ticking noise, i will def replace it.

anyone else have this problem before??

Did you check the up and down play of the shaft with the basket removed?

ya, there wans't any play in the shaft itself.

and just my luck, i called k&t to order the bearing and they are at some races out of state and wont be back until next week. i was hoping to get everything back together to get on some sand this weekend.
