Keyser Soze Posted March 10, 2009 Report Share Posted March 10, 2009 Its like this. The keys are $15 bucks, and the timing is set, it cant be adjusted. The plates are just 15 more. You can set your timing to anything. I use a +4 timing key. Bought it off the HQ for like 5 bucks. Ive never had a problem with one breaking. The offset is tiny. banshee_terror_ Posted March 10, 2009 Report Share Posted March 10, 2009 it looks like it would sheer off. ive had it happen to a jetski. it pushed the flywheel against the case because it got all gamed up ended up blowing out a brand new top end. so i motor swaped a 650 to a 750 and i was happy. but i wouldnt do it. either mod your timing plate like i did or buy one there at most 15 bucks Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
J.J. Posted March 10, 2009 Report Share Posted March 10, 2009 Before I start, let me just say that I run a PD stator plate on my bike. The theory behind the offset key is not too bad; as we all know, it is the taper and proper torque on the nut that holds the flywheel in position, and the key is just supposed to index the flywheel blah blah. I fully agree with that. However, if the $15 key interferes with the fit and the required "push-up" of the flywheel onto the shaft, then shit's gonna happen. We have been using a taper fit for our key-less propellers in 100 000HP applications for at least the last 20 years on our container ships. I say, index the flywheel using a protractor and leave the key out, IF (and that's a big IF), the tapers are correct and matched, the "push-up" of the flywheel onto the shaft will keep the flywheel in the correct position.
