Exhaust - thinking out loud

Stock bike, stock everything, never been touched. I intend to pull it apart this summer and get some dune porting done along with maybe a pair of 28s. In the meantime, I need some pipes. I would really like to get some PT Hi Revs but they're nowhere to be found and I despise giving Duncan all that cash. No long term intentions to stroke.

Never stepped into the CPI, Shearer type pipe. My riding will be 50% trail / 30% dune / 20% play drag. I was thinking of maybe going ahead and getting some CPIs now so I don't have to buy pipes then sell and rebuy later, or do you guys think I may just not like the CPIs at all until the motor work is done? I did not like the T5s, felt they were too peaky with a crappy mid and fell flat, I know the CPIs peak higher but from the dyno's I've seen, they seem to build a little smoother, or am I wrong? Is there a 'top end pipe" that falls somewhere in between the CPI and the PT's, like maybe Rockets?

I may try and wait a little bit to search out some PTs but just thinking out loud. I remember the used market being bigger... can't find crap right now.

i ran rockets for years and liked them a lot. i only recently switched to shearers because they were better suited and big bore for my 10mm cub motor.

i preferred the rockets over cpi way back when i had a stock cyl 4mm setup.

i think the rockets will come on sooner and make as much if not more power than the cpi.. at least thats how it was on my 4mm motor.

however, good luck finding a set...

he doesnt get on here much anymore. hes lost a little interest in riding since he broke his wrist at the dunes in 2007. he still hillclimbs, but thats about it..

hes still runnin his rockets on a 4mm cub motor.

the fricken dunes will do it every time. not sure of your brother's accident, sounds bad but that place will catch you off guard and swallow you if you're not careful. bout killed me 6 or so years ago. cool, thanks for the update.

You can't go wrong with a set of FMF Fatty's. Not exactly the peaky powerband of T5's but a great overall pipe.

Besides, if you decide to upgrade later, you can prolly sell your used Fatty's for what you paid for 'em.

Fit great, work great, not the coolest sounding exhaust note, but I like the powerband!!

had Fatties, had T5s, had PT Mids, had PT Highs, had Pro Circuits. but, never had a CPI, Shearer type of pipe. I don't care so much about overall power, but what's more important to me is smoothness. I'd love a set of CPIs, even if they lacked in the low end, but built power smoothly into the never-ending top end. What I mean by smoothness is if I take it out to dune in the trails or something and its super peaky and hard to keep in any power, but if they're smooth, even low power in the bottom end, if it builds smoothly, then it'll still be better at duning in the trails and such.

in my experience, the T5s were much 'peakier' than the Fatties and PT Highs and weren't as fun for me to ride, similar type of power, delivery albeit a lot more, as the stockers, peaky with a hard hit. I'm not a fan of 'hit', i prefer progression. Again, in my experience, I've never ridden anything that built power as smooth as the PT pipes, both Highs and Mids... just incredibly smooth.

I'm fairly sure I'm going to get another set of PT Highs, unless I decide to try some CPIs but don't think so, I like to wear shorts sometimes when I'm cruising, testing and stuff.

anyone ever see this sheet i use to use to compare some. i believe this was a 370 build, not sure on all the specs/porting, hell someone may remember it, dunno. one thing to notice is not so much peak power, but the broadness, say how long a given pipe is carrying over 50 hp

Sweet!! I like seeing dyno sheets that show my FMF's to be among the best non-drag inframes. :starwars:

The most torque, HP, and best linear powerband.

I guess my seat of the pants dyno wasn't far off.

All the power of T5's (actually more) without the artificially peaky powerband spike. Midrange you can use....

I had a set of t-6's on a stock bolt on bike, then switched to CPI's as future motor work was intended.. I went up 2 main jet sizes and ran the CPI's on the stock bolt on motor, and hardly noticed any seat of the pants power difference besides a bit more overrev.. So I dont think you'll be disapointed at all with CPI's until you get the rest of the work done.. Will be a huge improvement over stock.
