SLORYDER
I was thinking of using 3/4'' or 1'' (whichever fits better) schedual 40 steel pipe to make some struts out of. Does this sound about right?

spike
I'd use solid aluminum as well myself. 7075 or 2024 Square stock the same width as the shock mounts. I would also try to find or make bushings for them.

Does this sound about right? Don't use pipe............. it's not made out of a structurally suitable metal. You ought to look at some 6000 or 7000 series bar stock. BB3
I use aluminum tubing for the fronts and solid for the rear thread them and put heims in them.
SLORYDER
So by heims you guys mean putting a steel "sleeve" inside the hole drilled in the bar, that the stock bolt slides through? And is the purpose of this to allow the bolt to tighten up and to meke the sleeve/ mount assembly rigid, or to protect the aluminum? Thanks Edited February 25, 2009 by SLORYDER

Thanks I think by heims, they mean buying actual heim joints................. You would need to put a sleeve in square tubing out round tube if you were just going to try and ram bolts through the side of the tubing. That will stop the tubing from crushing when the bolt is tightened and tearing when the suspension cyles to compress or strutch the tube. No offense, but with the questions you are asking here, please let me suggest that you are probably better off buying a set of struts. These are one of those items, that if done poorly, can kill you. Thanks these are your heim joints. these are really nice, especially on your rear strut. you can use them to adjust the angle of your swingarm as to how hard your atv will launch. dajogejr
I have a set of front and rear struts done by BBIII which are not only very nice looking, but well built and nicely adjustable. I agree with firehead....this is one of those things where what good is saving a few bucks if your ass is no longer around to spend it. BBIII makes a nice strut, maybe you can persuade him to build you a set.
SLORYDER
Yeah thanks for the advice. What sucks is I'm on a really tight budget, doing a full engine rebuild (just my cyl. repair is over $500, and the pistons were $140 apiece I was thinking some schedule 40 carbon steel pipe would be strong enough, or maybe even schedule 80....I know it's not the lightest, but I'm more concerned w/ dropping the bike down to launch it w/ my +8 swinger for now. Anybody have any pics of theirs so I can get an idea. Edited February 25, 2009 by SLORYDER
lokisbuddy
What are struts for? Drag racing only?
