ericstam07
i just got a 89 banshee and it would always start the 1st or second kick. i went to wash it and now it wont start. i push started it and got it to run let it run for a bit and water was comming out of my left side case. after letting it run i coulud shut it off and it would kick start just fine. i tryed it the next morning and i couldnt get it to kick start or push start. today i took the cover off and water came out i have a fan on it right now drying it out. do you think i screwed anything up? ive owned many quads and dirtbikes and i know how to wash them i try and not spray directly on electronics and the engine. should i be good if i just let it dry out? 2001Stroker
My guess.....You got water in the stator, and the water was grounding it out. Then after a day, the water turned to rust. You need to check or replace the stator cover gasket. There's also a grommet that goes around the stator wires, where they come out of the top case under the laft carb. There's one more little small rubber plug that is in front of the sprocket. Take off the stator cover, and dry it out real good in there. Lightly sand the pickup and triggers on the flywheel. Noooo do not use a 3 jaw puller. That will for sure throw your shit out of wack and will lose magnification.Go to your local yamaha shop and buy the flywheel puller. It's 13 bucks. As far as shortened out, probably not.Like 2001Stroker said, check the gasket on the stator cover and all that.I even use a thin layer of gasket sealent to be sure i don't get water in my cover.you're correct on the clutch cover side, oil filled with no electronics.Good luck

ericstam07
yeah i am going to get a new gasket and use a small amount of rtv on it. the gasket looks like its re-usable but i dont wanna chance it again. is it a flywheel puller for just the banshees or is it used on many different applications? ericstam07
would all the rust just stop me from having spark? or?
fck55mph
I had the same issue and I replaced the gasket and shot some RTV around the wire grommet and inside the wiring itself. Hasn't gotten wet yet. Most of my water was getting in through the wire tubing itself. I wish there wasn't the big pocket for water to collect on the top of the case. I don't think you will need to pull the flywheel if you let it dry out good and maybe even shoot some WD40 in there and like someone already said, remove any rust from the triggers and pick up. I have a puller if you don't want to purchase it...I can send it to you and you can send it back when you're done....if you have good credit and can give me 27 good references.(just kiddin)
ericstam07
i just bought a puller from rocky mountain it was only $10.00 so not big deal. so should i just take some high grit sand paper to the trigger and the outside of the flywheel? what did you do fck55mph to get yours going again? fck55mph
I did what previous people have already stated. I let it air out real good, sprayed WD40 in there and let it dry out more. I cleaned the trigger and pick up with 320grit(can't remember exactly but I think that was it) and then did my best to make sure no more water would get it. Mine started from washing too. I didn't use a powerwasher either so I figured that water must have had a very easy path to get in. If you are gonna take off your flywheel, you migth as well buy the adjustable timing plate. That is a awesome bang for the buck mod!! Anyway, check the area of that grommet real well and where the wires come in. I put silicone around the grommet and pumped silicone in the wire tube and even cinched two zip ties around the wire tube. Probably overkill but I didn't want to be stranded by 2 ounces of damn water!! Think about that adjustable timing plate though man!!
