also if the head gasket is bad then re-tourqing it wont fix it, you need to clean it up and install a new head gasket...

If he has a bad head or gasket, wouldn't there be a visable leak? He said he's losing about an inch every hour, thats quite a bit.

He said the coolant was coming out of the two tubes by the radiator, I don't believe that would be caused by a bad gasket.

I'm with Loco on this one, sounds like something is getting pressurized. Possibly blockage somewhere.. When you drain your coolant do you flush it with anything other than distilled water??? If you use tap water, over time the minerals in the water will stick to your radiator, clump up, break lose, and plug something.

let me clairify...

it was mentioned earlier to re-torque the head and see if that solved the problem, i was stating that if the gasket was blown then re-torquing wouldnt make the gasket functional and that if he believed that the gasket was the culprit then he needed to install a new gasket because re-torquing the blown one wouldnt work.

and actualy with a bad head gasket there usualy isnt any visualy signs, they usualy leak into the cylinder and the coolant ends up getting blown out the pipe. thats why everyone usualy asks if your blowing sweet smelling white smoke out of one of the pipes.

a bad gasket can work both ways... it can suck coolant into the cylinder and blow it out the pipe and it can also allow pressure from the cylinder to pressurize the coolant passages and blow coolant out of the overflow. kinda like having a bad reed, on the upstroke it will pressurize and on the downstroke it will create a vacuum...

i guess i'd have to ask if it sounds like the radiator is boiling when you kill the bike or any other signs that it's overheating? if so then it's probably some sort of blockage or a bad impeller/drive gear.

if it's running at a regular temp then it could be the head gasket...

had this happen to me!! blew two motors... I had a leak in my radiator. really small leaks at the bottom... I found it by checking the undercarage after riding.. Check for wet spots.. (no not like a fat girl) I found one... took off my rad and did a pressure test.. have a bottle of soap water on hand like you would for a tire leak.. I capped two holes with moded wine corks and the used my compressor set on about 14lb... Im almost sure that the cap is set at 15lb.... spray the rad with the soapy mix and check...

I had this + a bad high flow impellor that after a while had a grove wore into it and coolant would leak into the gear case... then after a hard ride when the pressure would build in the case it would puke gear oil out the case air tube...

Id start with the rad before you do a rebuild.. better to find it now then after you spend the money.. JMO!

hmmm

Did u ever disconnected the hoses from the overflow coolant container under the seat.

There are two black hoses one is connected up and the other down. U may switched them while re installing.

I did that once.

U would loose coolant if that was the issue.

OK now this will seeem highly unplausible but Ill tell this story anyhow;

Last year when I bought my brand new banshee from the dealership in Cheyenne, I got it home and rode it several times with coolant dumping from the radiater hoses all over my pipes.

I figures that it was because it was new.

I later found out that .....(dont laugh please) that the premix ratio of 32:1 fuel to oil mix that I was using was entirely too rich and causing the coolant system to overheat.

I took it to the dealer and of course got laughed at due to the syrup I was running in the fuel tank.

He flushed out my tank, put in 40:1 ratio and the bike has ran like a scalded cat ever since with no overheat problems.

I just knew that some head gasket was bad or something else.

Has anyone else had this happen when reading the Banshee manual and owners manual and following 20 year old supposedly tried and proven instructions on mixing the correct ratios for fuel?

I learned the hard way.

I buy cases of the Yamaha lube in the small containers that all is required is one bottle of the stuff to 5 gallons of gas.

Its barney proof for my old ass.
