sled
please.. cr500 will flat out dust that crf450 you got.. i would stay away from the 125. they are a chore to ride. youd be better off with a 250 2 stroke if you wanna stick with 2 stroke. i would go for the 4 stroke 250. they make good power and are easy to ride. I've had a few people say that, but its never happened. I've ridden with a few CR500 and none of them ever dusted me. One beat me and it was by only a bike or two and it wasn't stock at all. it got around me at the top of 4th shifting into 5th which still isn't that great if you ask me. Once we got in the trails or on a track i was gone! I use to have a KX500 and it wasn't that great. it wore you down fast, shit rattle off of it, it was heavy, didn't handle for shit, and it had massive traction problems. a stock Cr500 has 55-56bhp and weights 252lbs, mine CRF450 weights a little over 220 and has more horsepower and torque. which one do you really think is gonna win? toolman
I don't like to debate such things but I have yet to find a 450 that can come close on the track or a flat out drag race. Yes I know the suspension is better i would like to do a conversion some day to a 450 frame. Which brings me to my point how does Service Honda get 10 to 12 grand for a CR500AF and there is a waiting list or used to be before the economy crashed. Thanks Just my 2 cents
MistBanshee
Those guys are right the 250 is a better buy, but how do you ride? The 125 will have more power but you are going to have to stay in the powerban to use it . So the question is how do you ride, if you like going slow go 4 banger if you ride hard & fast go with the 2 stroke and don't look back at the 4 strokes

As far as how I ride....I ride me shee like I stole it......as far as 2 wheels, since I consider myself a beginner in the dirt with 2 wheels, I'm going to say I'll ride very cautious to avoid the number of times I get put on my @$$. Sounds like the 4 stroke is the way to go for me. I'm not going to be racing it or putting it on the track, just going to get my fix until I can get to the sand. Now can somebody school me on 4 stroke jetting. I took a quick glance at the specs and this thing has like 5 jets in the carb. WFT!?
jayzx10r
A 125 was a good dirt bike for me when I was 155lbs. Now I ride a YZ250 and I'm really happy with it. I've ridden a couple of the 4-fiddys and I still prefer my YZ in the dirt. I guess what I'm saying is that I'd prefer a 2 stroke YZ250 over anything else. That 4-p is like a better 125 and is setup for a lighter rider from the factory. If you want, you can resell the 4 poke and make a profit to pick up a nice '02-'03 YZ for less than you would get for that 4-p 250. Plus, you would be waaaayyy happier!! I watched my neighbor drop over a grand for a new top end...piston, valves, bla bla bla for his HonDuh. His 450 still sux. They have more power but I find I really don't need that kind of power unless I'm duning. Mine is def more nimble.... I bought a $98.00 YZ piston kit from North County Yamaha that included all the gaskets, seals, piston, rings, clips...done!! After riding the crap out of my YZ, nothing has worn out or broken. So much for that reliability misnomer....
woodro77
get the 250 4 stroke , 125's suck ass , no bottom end power , i would say you are a little heavy for a 125 or a 250 4 stroke , (225) just my 2 cents , as for the cr 500 , it has way more power than the 450 , i have owned both , the 450 will kick the shit out of a 500 around a motocross track but in a straight up drag race you would have to do a lot of work to the 450 to get it to hang with the 500 . i had a cr 500 with a procircuit pipe and reeds and it was a total beast . So much for that reliability misnomer.... you are out of your mind , he dropped a 1000 into his 450 and it sucks ? you cant compair the new 450's to 250 2 strokes , new geomitry frames , 250 2 strokes havent been changed since 2000 . my crf 450 turns 100 times better then my cr 250 and i dont even have to mention the power , on not clutching coming out of turns in 3rd gear . my 450 is 11 pounds heavier than my 250. rebuilds are alot cheaper on the 2 strokes , but if you dont over rev a 4 stroke your motor will last a long time , my brother has a 2002 crf 450 and it has over 230 hours on it , original top end , i just check the valves a couple weeks ago and they are in perfect spec . RollinRhino
MXA did a comparison on the CRF450 and the CR500. Here is a transcript from the comparison on VitalMX: Vital MX Comparison CRF450 vs. CR500
jayzx10r
you are out of your mind , he dropped a 1000 into his 450 and it sucks ? He bought his bike used...and I mean abUSED!! When you blip the throttle, it feels like everything is out of spec...like a shaker of ball bearings. The suspension is sacked, the front brake pulses, steering isn't smooth.... I guess with labor, his total was closer to $1400.00. What a gyp. I remember Yamaha recommended a crank change every 40 hours with their 426. I put 40 hours on my YZ in the first 3 weeks!! Gotta love that Yamalube 2r...
lambchop
get the 250 4 stroke , 125's suck ass , no bottom end power , i would say you are a little heavy for a 125 or a 250 4 stroke , (225) just my 2 cents , as for the cr 500 , it has way more power than the 450 , i have owned both , the 450 will kick the shit out of a 500 around a motocross track but in a straight up drag race you would have to do a lot of work to the 450 to get it to hang with the 500 . i had a cr 500 with a procircuit pipe and reeds and it was a total beast . Woodrow nailed it. Here is the thing (and I'm the same size as you) as big as you are and the power your used too, you will not have any fun on the 125 especially if your in the woods or doing any kind of climbing. You can be fast on a 125, but it takes years of riding one to do so. I've owned them all. The 250F will have the torque for you to have fun on and you will love the usable power it has. As far as reliability, the fours are more reliable until they get wore out then they are expensive and timeconsuming to work on (alot more moving parts in one). You can do a topend on the 125 in about an hour, but will take about four times that on a thumper. But it all boils down to money. If you going to keep them of course you will want to mod them a little, It costs ALOT more to mod a 4 stroke than a 2. A great bike for trails and beating on is the KDX 200. Most reliable 2 stroke ever made with the perfect amount of power, and they made them for years so you can get them cheap!!! As far as the 500 zingers guys, There is a reason they stopped mass producing them and it wasn't cause people weren't buying them. You can only go so fast on them though because you can't get them to hook up or keep the front wheel on the ground. The 450F is actually a rideable bike with power you can use. You can be faster on the 450F unless you have balls the size of a car. Edited January 19, 2009 by lambchop
grpark20
Ok....my mind is made up for sure....I'm going with the 4 stroke. If I don't like the beast I can turn it for maybe double what I paid. I also will be losing 30-40 pounds on my next deployment in June, so my weight is just a variable. I really want something that is low maintenance, since I have the shee and like to wrench on it. Not mixing gas is a plus too...but then that's just my laziness. The bike is well within specs, infact when I looked at it he had all the paperwork from picking it up from the stealership that day. It only needs a few misc. things...grips, right foot peg bent, and rear brake lever bent. Remeber I'm a rookie on the dirt on 2 wheels too! The 125's might put me on my @$$ alot or into a tree!! Gotta love than unforgiving power though. So 4 stroke it is. Thanks everyone.
