2009 Banshee - Strange Noise!?

Hi guys,

Thought my first post on here might have been a little more cheery..... however, I think I have a problem.

Two days ago I picked up my first Shee - a 2009 Banshee!

All was great and I have been having a ball over the last couple of days. Since I've picked it up I would have done less than 5 hours riding.

The problem is, is that it appears to have developed a bit of a rattle/noise in the right hand side.

Symptoms are as follows:

- Noise appears to be coming from the kickstart/transmission/carby area.

- Noise only appears to occur in the lower revs. When I rev it up, I can't hear it. However when the revs come down, the bike seems to vibrate and this is when the sound is evident.

- When riding along and the bike is under load, I can't hear it. But when I slow down and revs drop, I can.

- Noise isn't transmission/speed related. Noise appears to be engine/revs related.

- Clutch in/clutch out..... doesn't matter. Noise is still there.

- The noise isn't there when the bike is cold. It is only there when up to operating temp!

- I've checked fluids and everything appears to be ok. (Gearbox has oil).

- I've checked a lot of other things that could be rattling. Have used screwdriver to try and isolate it but haven't had much luck. I have read about the issues some guys have with the kickstarts, but it doesn't sound to be isolated in that area. It's very close though.

Since I've got it, I've run 40:1 because I was told to by the dealer. All in all bike still goes very very hard and rides fine. Just makes this weird fucking noise that I can't get rid of.

Would take it apart but I am a little hesitant as it is only two days old!!

To fast track things I have taken a couple of videos so hopefully someone can shed some light!

This is a vid of the bike on the handbrake/rev limiter. The rattle is very noticable:

This second vid is when the motor is free revving. Noise goes away in the higher revs, but as revs drop, noise comes back:

Apologies for the long post. Just paranoid that if I keep riding my bike it will explode!

Cheers people,

Dan

I don't know about internal but external it looks like your motor is held in with a few paper clips make sure your motor mount bolts are tight. When I hear the sound it looks like something black is rattling against something.

The piece I'm talking about is right behind your kickstarter. Maybe I'm totally off but just throwing shit at you to check.

Yeah the paper clip looking thing looks to be apart of the rear brake assembly / switch for the rear brake light.

Just got back from checking the brake lines/cables. They move around but don't appear to be making the sounds.

Also made sure all the bolts are tight n all. All is good on that front.

Just very odd how it doesn't do it cold, only when hot.

Also - is it quite normal for these bikes to have a bit of transmission noise when cold? Operating temp it appears to be fine/relatively quiet. But when cold, it sounds like a straight cut / dog box some friends of mine have put in WRXs/GTRs etc. Sounds nuts!

This stuff is just a bit hard for me to gauge whether or not it is normal. This is my first 'Shee!

Ain't the kicker shafts on a sprag (one-way bearing)? Use a mechanic's stethoscope, or a long 3/8" extension to pinpoint the noise. Just stick the ratchet end of the extension in your ear, and touch the socket end all over the motor until you find it. Or, just bring it to the dealer, and let them deal with it.

I don't know for you in the us but my friend bought a 08 banshee last summer and he had no warranty at all... not 3 months not 1 month 0 day of warranty lol

if it was a brand new out of crate bike he got screwed they have to have some type of warranty.

Yeah if you have a warranty take it back to them and tell them to fix it. On a side not what oil are you running at 40:1
