Damnit Bob
I recently got myself a 96 banshee and now that the weather is cold, the low compression is killing my foot trying to get her started. Ive come to grips with the fact that i need to rebuild the top end, what all do i need? I dont want to go crazy and i have a tight budget, where do i start and how much is it going to cost me? It currently has a stock bore and the only mod to speak of is an old DG exhaust that was on it when i bought it.
278
Well if all you want to do is get the compression back to normal, you probably just going to need new gaskets and new piston rings, but with the new rings you need to have the cylinders honed. You will not really know what it will cost you till you get it apart and have someone look at the cylinders. You need to have the cylinders checked to see if they need bored or not. You dont want to put new rings in a cylinder that is worn out. Get you jugs off and get them to a good shop and they will tell you were to go from there. Damnit Bob
Im guessing that I am probably going to need a bore, the compression in my right cylinder is only about 95psi. Other than the machining that i need, i will also need what?? pistons, rings, gaskets... what else?

You will need 2 piston kits....they include rings You will need a top end gasket kit You will need a hone or bore/hone depending on bore tolerances It would be a good idea to also replace the wrist pin bearings. It should all cost somewhere around $300 with a bore and new pistons, if you can get away with just a re-ring and hone it will cost around $170. BumpaD_Z28
Don't forget the beers to drink while you are workin on it!! +1 to that Here is the list I'm working on : Wiesco piston kit (part# PK140 in my case) COMES WITH some of the gaskets Exhaust O rings (may be in the Wiseco kit) Intake gaskets (also may be in the kit but I need 6 total since I run spacers) and of course (optional) NOSS cool head with domes and O-rings :) ~DaVe Edited December 30, 2008 by BumpaD_Z28

Maybe you just need to re jet, maybe you need bigger pilots,if you are on a tight budget you should be sure before you just overhaul it unless you just want a fresh motor. Alot of guys on here have been having trouble staring there bikes now that it is cold due to jetting issues. What are you jetted at? Just my thoughts
TJScott
every thing you need at midwestactioncycle.com top ends are easy, took about 3 hours my first time on the rm125 you can get a stone hone for like $10 at most farm supply stores. do not use a ball hone whatever you do

Just my thoughts  Yeah I checked it with a compression gauge, left side was about 110 right was only 95 psi. Im running 260 mains and stock 25 pilots, i have 270s and 27.5s in my toolbox but once it starts it runs fairly well. I know i could get away with doing it super cheap, but i think i would rather just do it the right way and save some headaches later. I think i may be able find 300$ in the couch cushions Generally what is the next piston size after a virgin bore?
