My next move would be measuring the depth of the cylinders...I honestly think someone decked them.

I know this doesn't explain why it was fine with stock rods and stock pistons...but unless we're missing info from you or your info is incorrect (don't take that the wrong way...just saying) the cylinder itself seems suspect.

With that much bore it just might be hitting the outer edge of the dome. Measure the id of the dome maybe all it needs is to have the of the dome opened up? If the solder stays up in the squish area and the piston is only tight on the outer edge that why it never squishes the solder.

May not happen.

If the cylinders are that far below the deck with a spacer...you could put a flat piece across the deck and not get the squish you're looking for...and the port timings could be out of whack as well...
