hollisatp
so I rebuilt the top end and got a cool head.. I dont think it is leaking into the cylender cause I am not getting any moisture out of the pipes. it was running great and staying cool but slowly started to creep up in temp. I did not see any leak out the drain tube, but when I went to add coolant, it took about 3 cups! Any suggestions?

Any suggestions? you sure it was full before you started it? maybe you had an air pocket and it just filled up after you started it. you cant smell antifreeze in the exhaust can you? 3 cups is highly unlikely to come out anyway.. BanditOnTheBanshee
check to make sure you tightend the drain bolt on the side of the cylinder. when i rebuilt last summer i forgot that and took me days to figure out where it was leaking from. hollisatp
yeah.. drain bolt is tight.. found that when I added it to fill her up..!! I dont hink it was an air pocket.. I ran it for a while and it stayed cool... then about an hour later it slowly creeped up..
SSSSSS!
You may have pinched an o ring when putting it together. Did you use grease on the o rings to keep them in place? Are your cases sealed good, any seapage? Water pump seal? Did you increase your compression with the head? I have had an o ring failure on a dome. Edited December 28, 2008 by SSSSSS! locogato11283
if its sucking antifreeze you should be able to notice by the sweet smell of the exhaust. it probably wont even be enough to affect performance. i would fill all the way up and ride it and see if it drops. thats the best way to tell if you have a leak. the temp will naturally rise as the machine gets hotter. you need to see if the coolant is actually dropping. hollisatp
ok now I just realized I torqued the head bolts but did not re torque them after break in. Do the o rings shrink after heating for the first time? could this suck in a little bit of coolant? Also I thought I fouled a plug on the left side but when I switched the plugs from side to side, the problem followed the plug. Could this be a result of sucking in coolant? 2001Stroker
I'm with loco on this. I'd almost bet that it's leaking into the cylinder. You might want to make sure it isn't. It's too easy to pull the head off and reseal it. Water DOES NOT compress. It can ruin your engine. Your piston and dome can get so pitted from water, that they look like they have a bad case of cottage cheese. Not pretty. Just pull the head off, check the o-rings, replace any that got pinched, check the head and deck for straightness, and put it back together. It takes like 10 minutes. If it did have an air pocket in it, it's possible that the head got really hot, and when water finally hit it, it warped some. I would start there, just to eliminate the head and o-rings. locogato11283
yea sounds like you need to pull the head after hearing that info. id say something is wrong on that side.

hollisatp
RADIATOR LEAK!! I found some small pitts on top and on the bottom that were wet. When I hooked my compressor up, there were tiny bubbles!! anyone got a used radiator they want to get rid of?
2001Stroker
How much pressure did you put in the radiator? They can't hold much more than about 20lbs. Using an air compressor might have made a leak. You're supposed to test pressure with a coolant system pressure tester. Looks like a radiator cap, with a hand pump and guage on it. hollisatp
I set the psi at right under 15 psi. Still bubbles.. Ill post a pic of the pitts.. Looks like a cars metal bubbling under the paint from rust.. cap works right around 15psi also...
bj.87
im having the same problem lossing coolant water with no leaking ... checked evrything and it was ok ,, i just found out the water pump isnt working good it heats up and sucks the water from the box
hollisatp
how did you check to see if the pump is working right? I opened up my radiator cap, started it up and watched to see the coolant flowing.. is there another way?
