cool heads

hello all.

ive just recently bought myself another shee after a bit if a break from off roading. my "new" one is an 03 which has been race tuned with a few decent mods. full FMF gold series, pual turner barrles (jugs) and pistons, flat slide kiehn carbs and the usual A arm and axel mods. im considering buying some cool heads but to be honest havent got a clue where to start. do they increase power or are they just to just assist cooling? what size domes would i use? re-jet? im from the uk so keeping my shee cool isnt really a problem as its usually freezing here and summer is usually on a wednesday in august. any tips would be appreciated

cheers all

It would help cooling.

It raises the compression, and gives you more power for sure. My bike was piped, jetted, air filter, reeds, blah blah, after I threw the head and domes, and advanced the timing it definately had more power through out the entire RPM range, instead of just when it hit pipe, and at top end.

Domes depend on your elevation.

It's well worth the investment. Definately make your bike more solid.

I would NOT by a pro design cool head. You have to change all your head studs if you do and they have way to many orings to leak from, there are alot of other brands out there that use the pro design style domes they are good heads. There are so many domes sizes and designs out there that you need to by the ones that suit your needs.Who ever you decide to by your head from will steer you in the right direction on which dome selection to make.

If you are at sea level and want to run 93 octane fuel and +4 on your timing then you should run a 21cc dome, anything smaller than that you will need to start running higher octane fuels.

thanks for the info guys, my elevation is 196m or 648ft and im using normal pump fuel. like is said its pretty strong at the minute but as we all know theres always more horses to be squeezed out lol. im definitely gonna advance the timing by 4 degrees. just got to figure out which cool heads to buy now. oh yeah while im here any suggestions on reeds? think mine are stock at the minute, ran siome V3's on my last shee and was VERY impessed.

If you go to the general banshee discussion section of this site there are some good x mas specials going on, they have cool heads and alot of other parts on sale. I like V force reeds i still have V-2 reeds, have not tried V-3 yet.

Just a "heads up"... Gasoline octane in Europe including Great Britian uses RON whereas, in the U.S. we use PON. In short, our 87 octane gasoline is the equivalent to your 91 or 92 octane petrol. Something to keep in mind when choosing a dome volume maybe...

thanks deckheight.

so let me just get this straight in my head, the higher the compression then the higher the octane has to be until you reach the point where compression is so high pump fuel no longer has enough octane and has to be replaced with even higher octane race fuel? wow that paragraph had some serious octane in it.

so could any1 point in the right direction of what domes to use? we do have super unleaded fuels here which are around 98 ron

I've had aboslutely ZERO problems with my Pro Design head. Yeah, you have to replace your studs with the ones they provide. But, so what. They're nice heads. That takes all of 5 minutes. They have a compression o-ring, water jacket o-ring, an o-ring around the spark plug hole, and one around each stud. Are you saying that no other head had those o-rings? I'd like to know how they seal without o-rings around each stud.

Yes, higher compression requires higher octane. If you don't use higher octane, it will cause the fuel to detonate, and could blow a hole in your pistons. Is the 98 octane oxidized? If you plan using the 98 octane, you can use a 20cc dome. At sea level, 19cc domes is probably about the spot that you will need to start using race gas.

I like my Pro Design too... Other than 1 stock stud being a bitch, easy install.

I don't like pulling studs out of aluminum when i can help it, my mod quad head uses seals instead of o rings, and i think they seal better and my trininty head uses no seal at all.I had a pro design head and i sold it. I had a few leakage problems but the main reason i sold it is that the coolant doesn't flow properly through the head and cylinders. The way the head is designed it lets the coolant shoot straight through the head across the top of the domes and doesn't make the coolant go down and flow through the cylinders coolant passages, were as say for instance a NOSS head has defectors built into the head which makes this happen for ALOT better cooling, other heads out there also have done this. If you look at a factory yamaha head gasket it all so blocks of the right passages to make the coolant flow how it should.

This is my opinion after the reasearch i have done, and after the different people i have talked to, i know there are alot of people that like pro design heads but i do not.To each there own

Your 98 RON would be the same as 93 or 94 U.S. Just use one of the octane charts like this one http://adaracing.com/all/head-kit-yamaha-b...llet/yb350hdkit to to figure it. Near as I can tell, the closest you can get and be 98 RON safe would be 21cc. IMPO, you could probably get away 20cc domes as long as you were very careful about keeping fresh fuel in the tank.
