TZ bearing or straight cut gears

Recommended Posts

damn baller!!!

Maybe I am stupid, but what is a baller, lol.

Bellicose...I don't blame you. The thought of pissing away thousands to save a few hundred has never sit well with me either.

I've been lucky on my last two cub motors to have a good friend help me, and he's done quite a few of them.

I put my faith in him when he said straight cuts weren't needed...throw a good PTO bearing on there, and you're fine.

2 years and a LOT of runs later, he hit the mark with me. I would LOVE to have a spring loaded hinson and straight cuts.

Now that I'm gonna spray it with 30 some time this year....that might be one of the next things on the list....

That setup is very nice...enjoy!!

I would have much rather purchased something else with that kind of coin, but like loco said above, I will not ever think that I am sitting on a time bomb. Do not want to :nuke: my hard work.

It is funny, I took this advice before you posted #11 above. Just ordered them...

Both post are accurate per my line of thought........., but it might not read very cleanly in this case. One other opinion that I have is that if you're going to do straight cuts, you might as well do the spring dampened Hinson unit. The benefit from that setup is a major attraction to me, and the fact that it happens to come with straight cuts gears is a secondary thing. :geek:

I purchased the spring tension basket, so what are the benefits the spring tensions offer? I suppose that is a question I should have addressed before buying the basket, but it was $600 compared to $400 for the gears. I figured it was easy to justify the extra $$ without knowing the specific benefits of the springs, other than I have seen the cushions go bad even in a billet basket set-up.

You answered your own question regarding the springs....

Billet or stock...they can go bad. However, the billet basket is a harder metal, so it's more resistant to notching like a stocker...and the ears are stronger.

Hmm, I would have thought the spring did more than that. Well, it is good enough for me. Those cushions make a mess when they grenade.

The springs are more durable and provide a much more consistent launch/torque surge absorption. Most folks probably would never notice it, but if your a high-end drag racer or simply a fan of the better engineering solution, then the springs are the way to go. :geek:
