2001Stroker
Is the lein payed off, and just not taken out of the leinholder's name? Is it titled and registered? Some states require that. If it is, PM the VIN and registration numbers to me. I'll run it through the DMV files. That would tell you who the lein is with, and their address. If you can't find the person, contact DMV. Most state DMV's will give you the paperwork that needs notorized and sent to the leinholder's last known address. If he/she doesn't respond within a certain amount of time, it belongs to you. Here, it's 15 days. And then you can get the title put in your name. It's a few extra hoops that you have to jump through, but at least you won't have to worry about it getting reported stolen by the leinholder. locogato11283
sounds like it could potentially be a headache. i would say fuck it, if it were me.
2001Stroker
sounds like it could potentially be a headache. i would say fuck it, if it were me. It's not that bad. I've done it with 2 different boats, a jet-ski, and a truck. The sucky part is waiting for them to respond, or NOT respond. Oh I forgot, when you send the notorized papers, it has to be sent through USPS Certified Mail (signiture required upon receipt). Good luck. BklynLOD
Thanks For the Response guys. I know the guy thats selling it to me for a few years now. He's also throwing in a 2 bike trailer in the deal. He told me to give him half the funds now and the other half when i get the title. I can b an asshole and say i wasnt able to get it and use that money for another clean frame. But the guy is actually a cool legit guy so I'm gonna do the right thing. Worse case scenario, how much am I looking at for a frame and the labor to swap it?

On the title it should show you the bank that the lein holder is threw. if you call them they will probably tell you that its been paid off. If your buddy never registered it when it'll still show the lein and sometimes here in ny it will cost extra to get a new title printed up without the lein thing on it so sometimes people don't bother if they know its been paid and clear
The Quadfather
If your state is like Oklahoma and you dont need to register to ride it anywhere then you shouldnt have a problem, just make sure you git a bill of sale with it.and If you want a title do like they said and call the lein lender on the title and see if its payed off.chances are its probably not. BklynLOD
Give me half now, half later and there's a leinholder on the bike this guy can't find. Run, don't walk from this one.... It's a mechanical lien, not a bank. I know the bike is legit. Hes telling me to give him half if want the bike and work on getting the title, if i cant get the title he'll give me the money back. I can always just get another frame for it though. I know its not a stolen bike or reported stolen. I think its a steal though. The mechanic shop is no longer there. Thats y he cant find the lien holder.
dajogejr
It is a steal, give him a refundable 50 or 100 dollar deposit. Why pay for half if he is the one that has to do the legwork to get the lien off it. I don't think you should have to give him half....all you should do is give him a good faith deposit, and get a receipt.

2001Stroker
A mechanic's lein is totally different than a bank lein. You shoulda said that in the first post. There's civil court involved, and a bunch of b/s paperwork. I wouldn't touch it until he gets the bike in his name. Somebody else obviously owns that bike, and he's trying to get it for work that he did. If the other person pays for whatever work your friend did, he has to give the bike back. If you have the bike, then you have to give it back, or the real owner WILL report it stolen. You're getting yourself into a big mess. Don't touch that bike until the mechanic's lein is done.
