Shift Shaft Slipping

Just finished a complete teardown and am having some shifting issues. It seems like my shift shaft has a little side to side play in it. When trying to downshift my shift shaft is able to slip past the nubs on the shift star. Now if I pull out (away) on the shifter while i down shift everything is perfect... make any sense? Its almost like something needs to be applying pressure to keep the shifter against the shift star...

and by play we are talking 1-2mm... very small amount

any thoughts??

Yes your right CB, he probably does need a new shaft but, you might want to consider (when you get your new shaft) to check that side to side play before you button it all up. There is a "bung" (moled in chunk of aluminium) on the clutch cover that the shift shaft hits to stop from sliding to far out.... This is gonna wear first because its soft aluminum where as the shift shaft is strong steal. If this is the case, take it to a welder who does aluminum and have him throw a glob on there then grind it down nice snug fit.

Make sure the adjustment screw is in. it has a regular screwdriver head and a adjustment nut. If its in to far the shift shaft falls and wont grab.

You beat me to it, lol. When I bought my bike it was going the same thing and alot of play in the shifter and wouldn't center. Took the clutch cover off to find that screw and the lock washer laying in the bottom and the washer went threw the gears. The other half of the screw was broken off in the cases. I got lucky cause it broke off even with the cases and wasn't tight and unscrewed it with my thumb. Cost me $12 bux to order from dealer and a week to get though. As long as you have it apart spend the $30 bux and put a modded shift star on it and check the kicker idler gear for play
