MarineNYC Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 I have a 2003 S10 ZR2 4.3L. I have K&N Cold air intake. Throttle Spacer. And FLowmasters. So I order a Hypertech Power programmer 3. Looking for a LIL more. They claim it will add HP, Stiffen up my shifting and give me better gas ml. So I install it with no problem. I set the fuel curve fro 87 gas because im a cheap fuck. I start her up and head out on the road. She warms up I give her gas and she PINGS like a mofo. I call them up and they tell me that because of my other mods I need to run 93 octane and still keep the fuel curve set @ 87 oct. To tell you the truth I feel nothing at all. But the shifting does seem alot stiffer. So now I have to pay for high octane for nothing. Any Help guys? I dont know much about engines. Quote
caddyman Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 My suggestion......send that shit back! My wifes rig is a Asrto van, with a 4.3....same motor as you.....I have K&N, full 3" exhaust and never would run one of those programers. The only time you will get beneifits is on 93 octane. With the programmer set for 93 octane. I'm a cheap bastard too, thats why I won't run one. Quote

I bought one of those for my 5.3 silverado hooked it up tuned it and SHIT! I thought it screwed up my truck. It wanted to die when ever I would stop, I could tell something wasn't right as soon as I started it. I ended up sending it back for a full refund through 4 wheel parts. Quote
bansheesickness Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 HYPERTECH makes one of the worst chips out there. the engine light will come on all the time, and it will make some trannys shift weird. ive had good luck with superchips and BANKS. Quote
indiana banshee Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 I sell hypertech, superchips, edge, bullydog, and sct and i havent had alot of problems with any of them. There are always some bad stories with any products you buy. What mode do you have it set on. And yes it is better to run premium than regular. Unless you are looking mainly for horsepower one of the programmers will not help gas mileage much at all. They have programmers that are more for fuel mileage but its just a minimal increase. Quote
indiana banshee Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 Also the programmer 3 is there old model they are discontinuing those and now they use the max energy or the max econ. Quote
bigboybanshee Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 Maybe there are existing issues with your vehicle before you install the hypertech programmer and the new program is making your problems more obvious? I installed the Hypertech Max energy program in my truck, made a very noticeable difference. I changed the shift points, installed power program, and adjusted for my 20" wheels/tires and it really woke my truck up. I noticed the torque more than anything, and I average 75-100 more miles to the tank with the new program. I have a gas truck too, not diesel. 96 GMC Sierra, 5.7 liter, cold air intake, gibson headers, flowmaster, custom tranny, (shift kit, accumulators blocked off, etc) I have had an extremely good experience with my hypertech programmer, it's already paid for itself with the fuel savings. Quote
locogato11283 Posted August 28, 2008 Report Posted August 28, 2008 gas engines just dont respond to chips like the diesels do.. Quote
bigboybanshee Posted August 28, 2008 Report Posted August 28, 2008 gas engines just dont respond to chips like the diesels do.. Of course... But I don't think the hypertech program is what made this guys vehicle run crappy, unless it just happened to be a faulty hypertech unit...lol, I said unit. I was just throwing my .02 in the jar since I personally own/installed/use a hypertech programmer and have had excellent results with it. I do agree there are probably better programmers to get for diesels, I've got friends with an Edge chip and another with Bully dog, nothing but great things said about them. Quote
05.Banshee.SE Posted August 28, 2008 Report Posted August 28, 2008 gas engines just dont respond to chips like the diesels do.. +1. You are better off boosting the 4.3. My friend boosted his 4.3L Blazer and he smokes a lot of people. Next is an LSX Turbo swap, 1200 RWHP. The 4.3 block loves boost, it's solid as shit. Quote

Quadzilla, Edge, Smarty, TST, list goes on. Personally I love Quads stuff, great customer service and once they get a few things sorted out in the Adrenaline, that will probably be my next toy. Quote
shanYE west Posted August 29, 2008 Report Posted August 29, 2008 I got a hypertech programmer for my 7.3 Its a diesel but I haven't had any problem with it at all... Quote
