First Banshee (non-running) So MANY questions
Ragar replied to Ragar's topic in Banshee Repairs and Mods
I actually see a complete motor for sale...sorta... in my area, he has the crank (stock welded and trued) and just needs to go back in for a fair price $400 so that and a top end and ill have a running stock motor.... I think if i can get ahold of him thats the way ill go.. then take my time, watch for deals and build this bottom end into a Serval over time. any word on the Lone star D-Arms ive seen them for sale and mentioned but cant really get a opinion on them. I work on Motorcyles for a living, four strokes are a bit mor tecnical then this, but the theroy of the two is crazy different. Ive been in love with two strokes for most my life, had an atc 250r and a HUGE POS Trail Boss. Im really excited to do research and built it bit buy bit -

Ive always been one to build my way... so this might be a long process, but i think I might even do a serval eventually....sounds like the kind of thing i want.... might be a lot to do to make a monster, but Im hoping its worth it! -

$1500 in the motor will have me a ported, 4 mil stoker.. i wouldnt call that stock O.o another $250-$500 ish for pipes and maybe $100 on some decent second hand tires. id say 2k is worth it? or am i wrong? -

I like the J-Arms tbh I might be alone on that tho. they just look beaslty Just cuz another banshee is running i dont see that as an advantage. Id have exact knowledge of whats in this and that means just as much to me. Who knows what inside some of those up for sale... I know this isnt cost effective as that, and its going to take more time.. But i have it set up my way and i know the reassembly is sound too... I made the mistake of buying a Trail Boss and the guys said he "just had the top end done" showed me receipts and everything... welp. she just locked up on me one day and i torn it down and found sand in the bottom of the case, I called to company that did the "rebuild" and they assured me it had never been there that their records show he bought all the parts and sounds like he just wrote in labor times and made it look offical Im not going threw that again... I bought this knowing id have to invest at least...and If i get one mean SOB for $2500 total investment and its done my way... Ill take the timely way over the fast way all day I do value your opinion... and really do think your right but buying one for $2500 or investing 2k and knowing what i have exactly under the hood.... Ill take the later even if it takes more time -

bore and hone included.. so NICE! prolly do that and just work on the cosmetics while i save up the rest of the cash. What do you guys all think, Im counting on your imput... I know four strokes in and out but if i can make this thing eat every four stroke it finds id be more then happy. -

http://www.herrjugsracing.com/Yamaha_Banshee.html Is this a trusted Site? I might be actually able to do everything all at once.... This seems to be a good price. plus can add heads and domes Im sure itll be extra to bore out my cylinders still... But stroked, welded and trued new crank, port of my choice, all bearings and gaskets, cool head and domes Say what $1500 shipped? Thats not so bad... might just wait and get a HUGE bang for my buck.... says up to 85 horse power but the 7 mil is over 85... and what 250 more with case trenching... how big a difference we talking for that money? Ill be riding alot of more open long trails, as well as some tight corners... lots of ports to pick from.... Id like something that moves fast but can get up and go in a real hurry! -

Not on a major budget, but more or less curious if its something i can do while its apart and run it with the stock porting till i regain the capital to do the head and port work. wouldnt be more then a season. -

Top end removed.... And WOW.. I've heard of terrible things like this but never saw them.... the crank is rusted SOLID! no end play no nothing. Cylinders aren't bad at all, i feared worse, minor bore over, i don't think hone would be enough tho. SO should i jut go for a stock stroke welded and trued crank and a top and bottom end gaskets? Or could i run the Stoker with the plate till next winter and Do the rest of the work? and If i use the plate do i miIl the head or is that for when you don't and use port work. I was told a stroker port is roughly $300-400 plus A Cool Head for stroker domes (in addition not included ) -

Also has stock Pipes... So i know I need to yank those off and redo the carbs to match. I want to run either DMC 916s or Aliens Do those match up well with a stroker? -

Not big. Basically that Kit i posted is it. for now.... Id love to go all out eventually. But extra $300 plus for port work, and a Cool Head is kind of a bit much atm. So will the stroker kit work as bolt in till i can get the stroker head and port work to match? I can do all the motor work myself easy enough. I do have access to a mill and machining tools -
So, I picked up a 1987 Banshee for $500 The guy i got it from knew nothing about it other then it was his brothers and he parked it and never ran it, and was just getting rid of the things that were sitting around after he passed. Thats the story anyways. The motor doesn't roll over. Top end Is seized due to rust, still working them off, Took the Clutch Side cover off and looked into the trans gears and All that side is great. Looks like new tbh ha! The rough part is when i too the Magneto Side apart and saw it was FULL of water up to the top. I still haven't gotten the top end off to check how the crank looks, but with that side full of water and rusted I'm sure its rusted to.... i think the only way that much water could get into that side would be threw the crank case.. right? Ive been after a banshee for AGES AND AGES I was hoping this would just need a top end. But more then likely might need a crank too. I have a budget and just would love to get her running. so the main questions are... It needs a magneto. I see the Caltric one for $85 any experience with them? I saw this on Ebay and http://www.ebay.com/itm/YAMAHA-BANSHEE-4MM-STROKE-ENGINE-REBUILD-KIT-CRANK-PISTONS-SEALS-GASKETS-65-00MM-/161262881627?_trksid=p2054897.l5659 Would it be best to get the stroker kit and run the spacer till i can afford to get the Ports fixed to the stroker? or would i be best off running a stock stroke? I can seem to find an answer lol. I do want to invest into this guy, but Id like to be able to ride it asap. With the complete engine overhaul i cant do a port job yet. SO would it be of any advantage to do this or should i just get a stock Crank till i can do it all?
