Keep throwing the chain
turbowrenchhead replied to turbowrenchhead's topic in Banshee Repairs and Mods
Yes I have the lower motor struts in. I found the problem last night. I put a jack under it and ran it in gear to see how things looked while running. The rear sprocket bracket is bent now. I'm going to upgrade to the later model bracket. -
New radiator, new billet pump and gear, just changed the o ring on the water pump metal hose at the dyno 4 weeks ago. Checked the case oil when I first realized the problem and its fine, no cream. Re checked again later still no cream. Just pulled the head 2 weeks ago and changed both dome o rings and copper washers on the head nuts. I already ordered a new hose. I'll order a new cap too. I want this fixed before I go to WA the end of next month.

Keep throwing the chain
turbowrenchhead replied to turbowrenchhead's topic in Banshee Repairs and Mods
I'm not running a rear chain guide because of the prm skid plate. All the pivot bearings are new. New swing arm. Frame was gone over and repainted. I took a good second look at it and the top roller doesn't spin at all and its slightly out of line towards the engine. I'll have to pull the swing and inspect. The real bummer is I just changed my cases without the chain knock out. Only after a month the chain poped the case. -
How can the cap let almost all the coolant escape? Three weeks ago on my first trip with it I lost 25~30 oz of coolant.
-
I have thrown my chain several times now while its under a heavy load going around a corner when hamming it. The sprockets and chain looks straight on the bike. What should I be looking for?
-
Good idea, I should get another cap. Any recommendations? I have one of those Chinese ebay over sized radiators. Does an OEM cap fit?

After the last trips 3 weeks ago I had lost a significant amount of coolant on the trail. I had to keep adding. I pressure tested the system and it holds pressure and there are no external leaks that I can see. I pulled the head and on of the o rings didn't look perfect so I replaced it. I rode again last Saturday and I'm losing 8 oz of coolant per fuel tank of gas. The radiator hoses are new. The one from the water pump to the head is original. I ordered a new one just to eliminate the possibility of it being the cause.

Stumbled across this while searching for parts for a raptor. Is the size and thread the same as banshee? http://www.ebay.com/itm/06-Yamaha-350-Raptor-Rear-Wheel-Axle-Lock-Nut-15-/330935525919?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4d0d4b621f&vxp=mtr

What I found after our trip.
turbowrenchhead replied to turbowrenchhead's topic in Banshee Repairs and Mods
I found some silicone hose locally yesterday. I also went back through the carbs and stripped them down and blew out all the passages. I fired it up and let it warm up and took it down my street for a couple hundred feet up to 3rd gear. The lean runaway didn't come back but it didn't run long. -

No set screw on the lock nut. Where can I get one of those? -

I'm going to run the bike on Friday so I needed a quick fix for now. -

I found some 1" silicone hose today. It was a tight fit but it slide on with some silicone spray. Its clamped down tight with regular hose clamps. Where do you get the cascade clamps? -

They barely slide in. I found some silicone hose at a local auto parts store that will get it running again for now. I found some nice 1" intercooler hose on ebay for a reasonable price. http://www.ebay.com/itm/310528030733?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 -
I bought a $40 set of banshee exhaust joints off of ebay. They didn't last an hour or riding and they started tearing apart. What does everyone like to run? I though intercooler hose would work good but the local truck shops dont have anything that small.

I had a lean run away after throttle return one time so I had to kill the ignition to shut it off. Flicking the throttle didn't work. I was able to drive it after a few adjustments however I had to slide my thumb off the throttle to snap it back, then the idle would return to normal and allow me to shift or brake easier if I did that every time. I also lost probably 20~30 ounces of coolant. I did a pressure test and no external leaks and it held pressure. I ran a leak down test and it held 7 pds for a 1/2 hour before I pulled the tester off.The plugs looked too rich so I dropped the 350's to 340's. I pulled the head and I found one of the dome o rings did not look the best. There were imperfections in it. I cleaned it all up and replaced the o rings. Re ran the leak down and it passed again. The o ring must of only been leaking when it had the most load on it and pushed coolant out. I tried to get it into 6th a few times. It wouldn't pull in 6th gear in the dirt. I would barely on pavement. This is with a 15 front, 40 rear and 22" tires. I'm debating on what size to go to in the front. I have a 12 front sitting on the bench. We had to ride in hard rain for well over and hour. Plus some earlier that day. There were several large puddles that I had to go through. So it wasn't a surprise when I found dirt inside the uni filters and the intake tubes of the cfm. I cleaned it all out and cleaned the oiled the filters. Would K&N's protect better against dirt intrusion? Now I need to find a more durable exhaust joint. The $40 set I bought off of ebay didn't last an hour. I'm thinking intercooler hose and some heavy duty hose clamps. I'll have to make my way to a truck shop sometime this week.

I was already carrying 2.5 gallons on the six pack rack and it was empty by the time I got to the 87 octane station. I guess you guys don't understand how far out in the woods we were. Most of us had extra gas on our machines and everyone needed them. Its not like we could strap 5 gallons to a machine. We were all driving sport quads. -

I had no choice but to run since I was 50 miles away from the next gas station. We went to a very rural area of northern Wisconsin. -
After several hours of pounding on my bike I notice that there was play in the splines on my rear sprocket and disc hub. There was none when I built the bike. Should I be worried about this?

Plus I had no option but to run 87 octane. There were no other options. I knew this coming into this trip and tuned it accordingly. -

It already ran low on coolant 3 hours before hand. I'm thinking it got to hot and something melted. I'm going to run a pressure test on the coolant system and a leak down test before I do anything to it. Now I have to get it ready for West Virgina. Even more brutal trails! -

The trip was great. No women to slow us down. We are slow enough with all the break downs and issues we have. We had 6 guys in our group. The first morning we rode into Florence for breakfast and fuel. Right off the bat there are no brakes on the raptor 350 that we are borrowing from a friend. The front metal line end flare was snapped right off. Weird! We happen be close to a ford dealership and a auto parts store. I went to school with the lead mechanic at the dealership so we go it handled. Rode back to gear up for riding and the blaster started acting up. I pulled the plug and it was really grey. I found the carb boot clamp too loose. I changed the plug and tightened everything down but the damage was already done. It ran for another hour and then we had to tow it back. Pulled the cylinder on the blaster, rings caught on the exhaust port. Piston is shot. Riding was done for that day. Sunday we gear up and go in for gas by the state border in spread eagle. We head down a trail that I've never been on and come to a huge sand pit. I found a good sized jump and ran it and landed it. Our inexperience friend riding the raptor 350 hit it way to hard and came down on the left rear tire. Bent the axle, rear swing and cracked the rear fender. We towed him and went back out. We rode over 2 hours to Dunbar. Met up with another friend and rode 40 mies to Athelstane. On our way back it started raining and it was getting late. The temp dropped to 43 degrees and all of were soaked. We got back to dunbar 10:30 at night. We left our machines there and got a ride back to our campsite. I had a few issues with my banshee. After I filled up with 87 octane in Dunbar it started having what seemed like a lean rpm run away. I had to kill it once because the rpm's were getting to high. I had to slide my thumb off the throttle to get it to return to normal idle. I I pulled my carb slides and cleaned them off and coated a little motor oil on them to make sure they were not sticking. I checked all my clamps. My exhaust hoses between the front and muff didn't hold up well. They started tearing. I had to put just a hose clamp on the joint on the RH side. The LH side still had enough material to cover up the joint. After I filled up with 93 octane it seemed better and I could just release the throttle instead of snapping it back. But it started doing it again. So its not the fuel. I has to be a leak in a dome o ring or base gasket because Saturday after our morning fill up. I thought that I better check the radiator. Good thing I did because it was extremely low. I poured in 2 water bottles and then water from my back pack bladder. I checked it a couple more times and it was right to the top. I checked it again in Athelstane and it was low again but not near as much. Its still to the top right now. I don't know how I'm loosing so much without noticing a problem. I can't believe nothing melted down with hardly any coolant in it. It ran really strong all weekend. I'm still going to pull the head and cylinders to check them over. The rear sprocket and brake disc seem to have way more slop on the splines now. I'm wondering if replacing the sprocket hub and disc hub will be the cure for it or do I need to change the axle or upgrade the parts to handle the larger HP output. No one in our group could keep up. It was great to have that much power at hand. I was always struggling to keep up on long wide trails with my blaster. The only titties we seen were the ones at the strip bar two miles down the road from our site. -
