Some pics from our WV trip
turbowrenchhead replied to turbowrenchhead's topic in Riding and Events Forum
Best to keep close attention on those trails. I'm glad that none in our group had a mishap. I hit one of those vallys that blended in. I hit it way to fast and the bike bottomed out so hard that I ripped my full skid right off. -
Some pics from our WV trip

People run off the trail. In most places the cliff is right next to the trail. I came within inches of the cliff edge going around puddles. I would recommend it for a fellow banshee rider. You just wont be able to go on some of the washed out trails like #35 in rockhouse. -
Thought I would share some pics from our 10 day trip to southern WV. We stayed at twin hollow campground for the first half and then Ashland ATV resort for the second half. During our stay at twin hollow there were three crashes from fellow campers on our campground. Two went over the cliff on the hatfield mccoy trails. And another side by side did and end over end flip on an outlaw trail. The rockhouse trail system was the most difficuly out of the trails that we hit. We blew up a yfz450 and my banshee by the fourth day. I brought a blaster for a back up. I'm glad I did. Trail 35 on rockhouse. Doesn't look like much in the pic but it was very steep and deep gullies. I decided not to try it with my 5" of ground clearance. One of the crashes that happened was on this trail. This shows how steep it is in most places.

After I got my bike dynoed I took it up upper Wisconsin for some trail riding. There was much water on the trails and I got a lot of water and dirt in the intake and then it acted like a lean run away and didn't want to return to idle. I cleaned everything up, went through the carbs, even pulled the head to make sure the pistons looked ok and they did. Bike ran great after I went through it. I had also put the 340 mains in it from the 350's that were decided at the dyno. Dyno guy said to try the 340's with the air screw at 1/2 out trying to get it to pull sixth gear with a 15/40 sprocket combo. I replaced both sprockets a month ago because I bent my rear sprocket hub. So I went with a 14/39 and a newer style rear hub with 6 spokes. I left the 340's in because my next trip was to west virginia with a higher elevation. The first two days the bike ran great, however there was much water on the trails and I went real slow through them because I knew that I would get water into the intake. After two days it started doing the same run away idle. So I pulled the box and carbs off. I had no compressed air to work with so I sprayed out all the circuits with brake clean. There was traces of dirt lining the intake runners too so I cleaned them all out. I washed out the foam filters with gas and dried them off. I only had 2 cycle oil to re-oil the filters with so I applied about a 1/2 oz of oil to each filter and rang them with paper towel. I went to there local hardware store and tried to fabricate something to go over my air box opening to keep water and dirt from getting into it. I used a piece of plexiglass to form a tee pee roof over the air box. I tried to keep as much of an opening to the box as I could but the bike didn't like the air restriction at all. The bike still had somewhat of an runaway idle but not as bad. Probably because I couldn't clean the carbs out properly with compressed air. So when I got to an area where there were no puddles I pulled it off and ran the bike better without it. I ran the bike real hard on long open dirt roads. After 10 minutes of that it locked up the tires. I got a tow back and I tore it down. Both pistons suffered a lean burn down to the point that it melted the top of the pistons down to the rings on the exhaust side. I contacted CFM and they said that properly oiled foam filters with outwear covers should do the trick. The dyno guy said get rid of the air box completely and go with a K&N and outwear directly on the carbs. What do you guys think? I have another trip coming up Sept 6-9th and there will probably be water on the trail again.

Keep throwing the chain

No rear guide needed. I replaced the rear hub with a later model 6 spoke. pbi rear sprocket and a new sunstar 14 in the front. I got on some hard dirt yesterday and it held up nice. Chain stayed on all day yesterday. -
The source of the metal shavings was from my water pump billet gear. The inside edge of the teeth had some damage to them. I measured everything up to make sure it was sitting on the gear properly and then I shaved the damage off the gear.

I replaced the radiator cap, the hose from pump to head and a new water pump pipe o ring. I went through 3/4 of a tank and didn't loose any coolant yesterday. Hopefully I have this problem fixed. I'll find out in West Virgina in 3 weeks.

How much metal is too much?

I took it out to a friend place with a 3-4 acre lot. I could hit 4th gear so I was able to run it some what hard. It ran real good and I didn't throw my chain which was a problem because I bent the 4 spoke rear sprocket hub a few weeks ago. Hopefully it will hold together for the West Virgina trip July 19th. -

I pulled the gear out and lined it up on the case and it sits nice on the gear. I measured the distance it sits in the cover and made sure it sits in the middle of the gear and its real close. I filed down the damage and rounded the teeth off to the side to it will mess nice. I think it will be fine. I'll soon find out when I pull my oil next time. -

I have seen on a friends banshee where the water pump impeller was partially melted. That was enough evidence for me to go with the billet stuff. -

Those are new too. I checked. There is no play in crank or water pump. I just did rebuild this motor. I thought I covered my bases when I built it. Just goes to show you when you modify, it creates problems. -

Its hard to see the damage in the second pic. Its more noticeable when looking at it in person. -

It must be. No I didn't forget the washer. According to the oem fiche I should have it all assembled right. The crank bearings are new.
