you will have no issue with them cracking if you are reasonably careful. I think drilling the mount holes and using an electrical rubber gromet that has a 1/4" hole in them is a cheap/easy/simple way to ensure you wont have any problems.

I will NOT drive 30+ hours accross the country to #1 dune race, and #2 dune race a guy who in that last years hasnt had a bike that would live through the weekend. Makes no sense to me.
