  1. Sounds textbook for a lean pilot curcuit. Pilot circuit may be too lean due to improper jet selection or foreign matter clogging the jet. That will cause the motor to display the symptoms you describe. Try adjusting your air screw(s) and see if that makes a change for you or check the pilot jets for gunk or restriction in the orifice. Jay From SanD. BTW: You may want to post this in the exhaust/jetting section to get more coverage....
  2. Just got back from the UPS scale....11lbs, 2 ounces each 21x12x8 8 paddle tire. Does anyone know what the haulers weigh? I recall someone saying that their triple buff tire/blue label wheel weighed 10 3/4 lbs. The blue label wheels are less than 2 lbs (I think) so I don't think the weight of the standard haulers is significantly lighter...but they could be. If anyone can weigh a Hauler tire and can let me know, I'd appreciate it. Jay From SanD. BTW: what Kaw do you ride? I currently have an '05 ZX10r, previous was a '99 ZX9r, '93 ZX7, '93 KX250, '83 GPZ750, an H1 750 , and a H2 500.
  3. I'm looking for a periodical to subscribe to for articles, how-to's, mods, and advertisers that are more in tune with sand use Banshees rather than the couple I've seen that cater to farm or hunting use!! I'm not a trail rider and I'm not gonna haul out my sunrise Buck kill :ninja: or scurry down to the back 40 to locate a misguided gelding... Thanks for your opinion.... Jay From SanD.
  4. I'm gonna hit Glamis this weekend (6-8April) and and Gordon's next weekend (13-15th)...otherwise, I'd be up for it. You are welcome to meet up out there, even if you are just doing a day run... I've been to Ocotillo one time only, and as I recall it was mostly dirt except for 1 sand hill so are you going there for the sand or dirt? Do you ever ride at Ocotillo Wells off the 78 near Borrego Springs? I usually either hit the "mud hills" on the south side or park at pole line road. Probably my favorite dirt desert area. When it comes to dirt, I don't have a set of wheels/tires for my 'shee yet (I am looking), but I do have a YZ250!! :yelrotflmao: Are all of you on quads or also some bikes? Thanks for the offer...for sure another time. I'm (almost) always ready to ride!! Let me know if you decide to day run Glamis and I'll shoot you my cell#. Jay From SanD.
  5. I'm interested in your wheelset, both front and rear. What are you looking to get for them and what will your shipping charge be to San Diego...92117? Any holes or slashes, or repairs? I'd like to see the photos of the rears... Paypal?? Thanks, Jay.
  6. Thanks for the replies.... Was the change from 52 to 48 a pretty big change to your jetting? As it is now, there is a definite difference in the way my motor performs at noon versus 10:00PM. At noon, it kinda "4-strokes" until I force it into the powerband...at night it rips. I'm thinking that there is probably a LOT more power there than I'm realizing now!! Thanks, Jay from SanD.
  7. Parking at the pad by the beach store at Glamis Friday evening late, not sure where yet at Gordon's. Are you gonna be there as well? I still say we NEED a group FLAG!! Any ideas on this topic? Personally, I think a flag one could velcro halfway up thier current flag pole would be great. Transfer it from one mast to another and that way there would be no color issues if you have to run the "safety orange" flag where you ride. My $.02. Jay From SanD.
  8. Maybe we will connect up and ride out there... That area is my summer riding zone and the sand tire comes off my dirt bike after April 15 when I get back from Gordon's so I'll be set afther that. I can't ride my 'shee in the dirt until I come up with another set of tires but the YZ is up for it. I'm always up for a ride... Jay From SanD.
  9. Do you suppose the people that did this article did the appropriate jetting to achieve the best performance they could?? I wonder if they ran the stock airbox.....
  10. The part of this setup that bothers me is that he had to crank the spring to it's max setting to get his 3" sag. I'd like to see something that ended up in the middle of the preload range... Just that itself tells me he needs a different spring rate. Here is a bit of spring basics as I understand it: A coil spring is actually nothing more than a torsion spring...just coiled. Under observation, it actually twists within itself to give a spring effect. It is best to look at it as a coiled torsion bar. If this is true, a longer swingarm coupled with a (nothing personal ) bigger guy would benefit significantly from the TCS spring because of it's greater coil diameter, which translates into a longer piece of spring material---or torsion spring...all other aspecs (such as coil spacing and rod diameter) being equal. I prefer a longer (read as larger coil diameter), lighter spring over a shorter, heavier spring (stock diameter coil) as with the Cascade part. I'm sure either one will work though as long as the final sag ends up in the middle of the preload adjustment. You just get to be picky when you are doing your own mods.... Just my .02 pesos.... 11. Don't get me started on the (fe)eBay/Paypal BS. What I did was since I handle all my banking transfers online, I created a 2nd checking account specifically for eBay-Paypal and keep like 1 dollar in it. Since I conduct all my eBay transactions through it, I fund it when I need to from savings...right after I win an auction... or transfer out funds as soon as they post from it to savings. This way, if some lame ass tries to pull the Paypal powerplay for free goods like happened here, they get nothing...well, they get a buck!! Plus, the only account Pay-Bay can lock up is the one specifically linked to their site...my "Paypal checking account"...not the one with my actual savings/checking funds. Paypal has initiated a new angle to make more money. Now, if you have a "personal" account like me, you can no longer specify that you do not accept credit cards and that the funds must originate from a personal bank account. They demand that if someone wants to pay with a credit card, you must "upgrade" your account to accept cards...thus subjecting you to a 2.9 or 3.9% fee (don't remember which one) for every future sale transaction...regardless of point of fund origin. So let me see...Paypal gets a 4% cut right off the top and (fe)eBay tags you for another 5.25% ++ listing, final value, big pics, priority listing fees on top of that!!! Imagine what 10% of all eBay transactions equate to!! I just reread my first sentence so I'm gonna stop here. These guys totally ruined a wonderful online buying/selling experience with their greed and lack of seller protection. :woot: Seriously...Do consider creating the separation of your real funds from what you want to transact with Paypal by opening another checking account. At my bank it was free...in fact, I don't even have checks for it!! Hope this helps someone, Jay From SanD.
  12. In my never ending quest for useless factoids and TMI, I'd like to find out the criteria for determining when/why someone would opt for big bore vs small bore chamber exhaust. Is it strictly based on engine CC or a desired performance characteristic in conjunction with specific mods, or a combo platter of both size/mods to accentuate a particular characteristic? Just been kind of wondering... Thanks, Jay.
  13. On the Right...I huck a Right turn at the Arco station, go down the road just to where it widens out and park there. It is a perfect place to drop in at.... The area by the prison is pretty flat so I've never ridden there...but I've flown my hang glider from the mountain peak there...there is a pretty cool launch back there with a great LZ!! (Landing Zone) BTW: When will your quad be back online?
  14. So all these signatures that post their +7 degree timing plates are looking for more bottom end and giving up top end to get it? Is it something like giving up a couple of HPs on top to gain a substantial hit in the low-mid or is it an even trade of power for power? Is this something I'd want to do? You know me...sand use only!! Thanks for the info... Jay From SanD.
  15. I've been thinking of an easy accurate way to monitor my 'shees temp...and I came across this on (fe)eBay. Item #170095856293 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Temperature...1QQcmdZViewItem Now I know that you can't see it when you ride, but I thought it wouldn't be too hard to give it a look when it felt like it was getting a bit warm... I believe this style of thermo to be pretty darn accurate. Besides, you have 2 so you can compare readings for each cylinder separately. It looks EZ, and I like EZ... I don't have an access area to mount a standard round gauge cleanly to my bar clamp. What do you think?? Jay From SanD.
  16. I bought a set of the 21x12x8 8s but they are on the floor in my garage. I can send you a photo of them if you'd like before I mount them. They look just like my haulers except the buff continues about another inch down the sidewall on the haulers. The paddles look perfect as does the buff, tire construction, material, and vulcanizing. The construction looks GREAT and, well, I bought a set!! The cycle shop by my house had them for $35.00 each so it was a no brainer in my book.... I just wonder if they are gonna be heavier and if so, by how much. I'll weigh them if I can find a scale. Jay From SanD.
  17. Yea...I ride my YZ250 out there as often as possible!! I don't have dirt tires for my banshee but if you ever want to get together and ride Ocotillo, shoot me a PM and we will exchange numbers. I have a pretty wacky work schedule. For instance, I work 4 days this week and 1 next, so my schedule is consistantly inconsistant. I can get off work anytime to ride as long as I have a few days notice. Ocotillo Wells is one of my favorite places to ride and the road construction should be done by now so let me know... I ride out by the 905 too... Jay From SanD.
  18. My pilot circuit is running kinda rich so I'm thinking of swithing out my 52 for a 48 or 45. Is this a typical change for these carbs with my setup? I have experience with Mikuni's but the jet numbers for the Keihins seem to be a different calibration (I think) so I'd appreciate yor opinions. Is the change from 52 to 45 or 48 a HUGE jump? It runs well at night even though it's still on the rich side, but in the daytime it doesn't want to make the transition from mid-range to top end...kind of like hitting a wall and having to break through... I started with a 165 main and it was horrible...couldn't even climb Olds. Dropped the needle to position 2 and was at least able to force it to get on the pipe occasionally...barely!! I went to a 155 main and the middle position (#3) for the needle but am gonna try a 152. So I'm thinking 152 main, leave the needle in the center position, and go with the 45 or 48 pilot. I had Toomey's on my RZ350 and at idle the best way to describe the sound would be to say it "cracked" with every cylinder firing. I don't know if it's the Fatty's, but the note is not what I'd call "sharp" like the sound of my YZ (has a Fatty too)...kind'o dull. Like comparing an exhaust sound of TTa-TTa-TTa to da-da-da...use your imagination.. :sorcerer: Like I said, it just may be the pipes... What'cha think?? Is the pilot change too drastic?? Thanks, Jay from SanD. Jetting for 300ft altitude and 90 degree weather...sand use only.
  19. To change the AF (air/fuel) ratio, you need to install a Power Commander between the ECU and the injector(s) as well as remap. All modern sport bikes are FI and use this system. The best way to get max performance is to dyno and remap at the same time. It is an involved process but waaay more accurate than a carb can ever be. Here is a link to your particular application: http://www.powercommander.com/powercommand...120&yr=2007 My '05 ZX10r dynoed at 167.5 Hp at the rear wheel....woohoo!! Dynojet, the manufacturers of Power Cammander also offer free base maps that are somewhat OK, but as all of us that jet know...every bike wants it's own particular jetting. Getting off track...There 'ya go!!
  20. Anyone hitting the dunes over Easter? Currently I'm planning on Easter weekend and the following weekend...14-15 April. I'm thinking Glamis over Easter and Gordon's the following weekend. I met a really great group of Arizonians last time I went to Glamis that are in on the 14-15th trip...great family environment and good times!! Dune buggies, quads, and bikes...perfect!! :yelrotflmao: Let us know if you are interested... Jay from SanD
  21. I've seen a lot of views reflected in the various postings on this forum on Avgas, but I was wondering if anyone has any dyno runs using 100 LL vs. pump gas vs. race gas or a mix of each in a comparison format. I'm running 162 PSI comp @ 200' above sea level and have been using 100LL and Premium (91 octane) at a 50-50 mix for dune use. I've been happy so far and at $3.84 per G for 100LL, I have nothing but praise so far. Feel free to offer your dyno experience or first hand knowledge. I'm not too interested in second hand knowledge or "I heard from a friend that heard it from a friend's friend that the way to go was...." Maybe now that my 'Shee is broken in I will recheck my compression!! Mods are in my sig...I just guessed at my dome size though. I'll correct it when I pull the head. I went from a 165 main to a 155 and put the needle in the middle position from the #2. Going to a 152 and will also replace the 52 pilot with a 50 or 48 by my next ride. Thanks, Jay.
  22. WIth Easter probably being the last trip this year, anyone interested into meeting up at Glamis, Gordon's or Buttercup? I kinda lean towards Glamis, but if we go with a majority vote, I'm good with that... Depending on my work schedule, I'll either leave Thursday night, Friday night, or EARLY Saturday morning and return Sunday evening. I'll have a more concrete date of departure by Wed-28March when my next week work schedule comes out. Let Us Know!! Jay From SanD.
  23. Sorry to hear you had probs... Got in to Glamis in time to catch an early evening ride on Saturday and went to Olds... Even though I don't have my jettting down yet (I will by next trip--Easter??) I walked the 2 450s that were in our camp. The Honda had some work done, the '07 SE Yamaha had a slip on and jetting. I couldn't tell how far behind me they were, but I was told about they were WAAAYYY back!! Guess I need a rear view mirror!! Roached a few other quads, met some good people, and generally had a good time. Sunday it was like a ghost town and the dunes were smoothed by the wind, making it seem like virgin runs. The temp on Sunday was a bit warm, but afternoon was OK...until the wind kicked in. Perfect temp for night riding in shorts and T-shirts. Kinda odd to hear about snow and cancelled flights in other parts of the country while I'm out riding in 90 degree weather Went for a morning ride on Monday (today) and beat feet back home cause I gotta work sometime!! That would be @ 5:00PM for me today so my timing was pretty good to get me home at 1:45PM. Guess I should have shot some photos but I was having too much fun...the camera forgotten in a drawer in the RV. Sweet... Anyone planning a ride to Glamis, Buttercup, or Gordon's over Easter? I've got the bug... Jay From SanD.
  24. I won't be out there until probably close to 10:00 Saturday morning myself... How about 2:00PM? That will give enough time to get settled in... I went to Glamis on Wednesday for a day run...there had to be at least 75 people there.... :yelrotflmao: My bike is easier to find now....I have red shock boots on my blue 'shee!! Jay from San Diego
