If corrosion has built up and is causing your problem it's just shot. Electrical gremlins can be lots of fun.

On an ocilliscope you can see that it takes an initial surge or spike of electricity to jump the electrodes but once that gap is jumped the balance of the sustained kernal is at a much lower voltage. In my opinion your problem is likely in the ignition....
