Went and looked at the Powerbook G4 yesterday. I'd be lying if I didn't say I liked it. It's a little different from the look I'm used to, but I think I could get used to it. I felt pretty comfortable with the apps and integration. Basically, the only thing I couldn't get to crossover is my Microsoft Visio, but then I could load the Virtual PC and run it in that, which I would probably do for viewing webpages anyway, although GoLive has an emulator for viewing different browsers. The 15" comes with the latest Mac OSX an 80 Gig HD, and 64MB Graphics, and 512 Ram, and I'd probably add more Ram later. I could get 128MB Graphics, but don't think I need it. All the WiFi and Bluetooth wireless shit. I'd have Office & Quickbooks sent with it, then see if I can get a sweet deal on Adobe Acrobat, GoLive and Photoshop. Then find the right drawing software that will work, the MacDraft looked like a good starting point for about 4 bills. It's 1" thick and weighs 5.5lbs, compared to my 3" thick, maybe 4' and 10 or 12lbs, it's like a suitcase. I don't feel this is a hard decision due to having my current PC still around. My use it to store some music on and some other things, and let my wife work off of it some around the house, that is if I can get it back up and going. I'll probably PM you Walt, after I make this decision and send you my laptop to tink around with and see what you find. I appreciate all the help. I just need something with a different look and feel and I've just heard so many things about the stability that I feel stupid if I don't at least give it a try. I talked to one person that has been running Macs forever and said he's never had one virus and he doesn't run any security software, and he designs websites and does a lot of html and is online quite a bit. Well, I'll get back to you all later.

I'll plunk around with some thermal stuff later. I'm actually headed out the door. Demon, i'll get back to you.

The "Toomey" needle is a blaster needle and I agree, stick with the stocker. Try it in the 4th clip and see how shee does.

I've about got myself talked into trying out an Apple. I'm just ready to try something different I think. One of my customers has a nice Powerbook and he loves it. I don't really think the expense is justified, but my laptop is huge and heavy and seems to be hot all the time. My customer has the 15" and it's much much smaller and lighter, I know i can get that with a newer windows also, but whats the point of getting another windows machine. I have this one, and I'm sure with a little persuading, it'll be back up and going without much probs. I like the idea of going into something new and all new software options. I really haven't been too happy with the software I've been using, I don't really like AutoCad either. It seems I'm always looking for newer better software, never satisfied. Maybe with the Apple stuff, I can find something that will fit better. I've been browsing through a lot of the software. What I would need to have is and need to know where to find : Adobe Acrobat Adobe Photoshop Adobe GoLive Microsoft Office With the above, I can do a lot of what I need to do, and I'll find a good Mac CAD program. MacDraft seems to look okay for a cheapie. I don't really lik the idea of throwing another grand or two in software on top of the cost of the notebook, but we'll see. I was also looking at the Virtual PC and that looks like a decent way to get a little of what you need from windows if need be, but what about bringing in viruses and spyware, how would you protect from that, or is it not a good idea to present that into the mac environment? I'm starting to believe more that my comp probs are heat related. It's locked up three times today, and twice was when it had been on and the fan kicked on, then it locked, and the other was after those two locks, it wouldn't start up at all. So I left it for awhile and then came back and it started up. I have no idea how to fix a heat related problem. Later.

If I'm thinking of the right thing, it's just a jet kit. The needle is a little richer I think, but unless you've got a bunch of mods, the stock needle should treat you just fine.

Walt, I understand what your saying completely, and there is no way this computer is gone. I thought about replacing it last night, and I actually just like it too much. This idea of getting a Mac for my drawings and some work sounds like it's not a bad idea. I'm thinking of getting one, but I'm gonna sit on it for a day or two. Regardless, new comp or not, this one will be right here with me also. I've had it for for several years, and just too attached. This thing was smoking for an '02 computer. I've got Norton off of this computer, wouldn't let me put it back on last night, and I think I'm going to go get Mcafee today, to pull off whatever viruses I'm aquiring right now. But I don't know what good it'll do to try to install if I'm gonna reload. But I just can't seem to keep it from locking up. This morning, it's working fine so far for thirty minutes, but last night, it was really getting bad. What really gets me is it'll happen so sporadically, has nothing to do with what's open, whether or not my devices are enabled, whether or not the startup files are enabled. The only thing I can think of is when I seem to have more stuff open, but then that doesn't answer why it does it halfway through booting up. Maybe it does have something to do with the heat. This sucker gets hot, and I mean so hot I have to put a pillow or something between the computer and my lap. After working for an hour or so, the fan just comes on forever, it'll go off for a sec, but then it's right back on again. It's obviously not hot right now since I just booted up, and it's operating okay. What do I need to do to take this approach a step further. I don't really know how to get into this thing, I've tried and was afraid I'd break it. Walt, I believe I'll be sending it to ya regardless at this point in time, just a matter of when, but probably soon and I'll let you know. One more quick question, can you get Microsoft Visio for a Mac? Later.

thanks brooke. for the IM stuff, you know what i'm talking about.
-
i was kinda waiting for you to chime in, i knew your a "mackin" kinda lady. ok, that was stupid, anyway. i had just about made my decision to give up on the Powerbook and here you come. The thing i like about getting one is I'll always have this computer, along with 2 other healthy desktops running windows, so it's not like i won't be able to do things if I need windows. The new Mac OS X is supposed to be pretty pimpin. Dammit, I'm confused again. What size monitor did you get? I was thinking 15", that's what i have now. I think 12" is just too damn small.

i meant tats4life is asking 5,500 for his shee and it's worth well over 9Gs. my wording did sound a little funny.
-
well, i won't continue to bore you all, but I'll just fade out with this. locked up halfway through loading the antivirus back on and then proceeded to lock up the next three startup attempts. now i'm back on with safemode to start messing again. so i guess i'm not getting anywhere. i just might have to pm you Banshee370. but we'll have to figure out what kind of time and labor you've got to get involved with this crap. thanks again fellas, you all probably saved me 3G's.
-
Well, I haven't seen that car, but I lived in Polk Co and helped build the Polk County Powerplant out by Mulberry. BTW, I didn't know anyone was still running their parking brake. How do those things work??
-
keep saving. you'll want at least 3G's for a shee that's worth a damn. BTW, they'll be around for awhile. Go get a loan for about 5 and a half G's and tats4life has a freaking killer shee that should be about 8 or 9G's prolly more.

Are there viruses that attack the antivirus? I specifically remember it locking three times or so when I was running a virus check to see if I could find a virus that was making it act up. This is the longest it's been since it's acted up. I've been on for twenty minutes and restarted twice, by me manually, and it's come back up and performed fine. I just enabled the hardware that I disabled and restarted some of the startup services. My Internet Security has an error, so I'm uninstalling and reinstalling now to get it back on board. I did get a lot of the windows updates uninstalled. I'm going to try to get them back after I get the security software back on. Little by little. Also, for information, I'm running Norton Internet Security '04, and I check spyware with Ad-Aware. I'm going to quit using Ad-watch, that monitors the registry. That's the only security software I use. I have a firewall on my router, but I haven't been able to get on to check it since this has been going on, but it's obviously working or I wouldn't be on here right now. Later.

holy shit. search function will help and the bansheehq jetting faq, and jetting sticky at the top of the page.

Chill. Smoke a joint with the ex-Dell dude. Smoke em if ya got em. Unfortunately, I don't got em. I was told that's not a good influence for the toddler. Yeah right, it's only a matter of time. BTW, Walt, I just noticed your reply on possibly overtweaking, and your right, I guess that's a possibility, only I haven't tweaked in since the last time it was wiped, probably 3 or 4 months ago, so I ruled that out, but there coulda been some bad something in there.
-
Nater, that does sound like a good setup and I'm sure my shit wasn't set up before I was online. Walt, thanks again for the offer. I may just have to go ahead and do that, as I don't want to pay 3G's for a Mac that I only want to use for email and browsing since I don't want to pony up for another full suite of Adobe just for the Mac. Does the Mac come with Micro Office? or something like Corel? I like this comp, so I should probably just get it wiped again. Can't freaking believe I've got to get it cleaned and shined again. Freaking sucks. Thanks all you guys for the quick and intelligent responses. I was half-expecting to get some "dude, Mac sucks" stuff. You guys have presented some good valid stuff on the two and I actually didn't see any Mac bashing, which I kinda expected also. Let me register some of this and maybe I'll send you a pm tomorrow Walt. I'm still getting my file transferred over, uninstalling software and making sure I'm not going to lose anything. What about the pulling a ram card idea and checking like that, or will cutting the memory in half that quick without making system adjustments not be a good idea either. I'm sure it can't be good to continue shutting down and restarting over and over. Later fellas, thanks again. I'll still be around if you have any other thoughts.

I have disabled everything in the startup console, and went through services to see if there was somethings in there that should be disabled for now. All the drives and the usb connections and some other devices are disabled. On my last post, I was in safe mode, then it locked, not it's started up normal and functioning for the time being, but it is only a matter of time. I'm also going through and uninstalling unnecessary apps from the program menu. I'm trying to remember what changes took place, and I really can't remember anything other than the updates I downloaded and installed. The memory idea isn't a bad one. I thought of that, because the lockup is so sporatic, at the moment, it doesn't seem to matter whether it's starting up or been started for awhile, so I'm thinking I may have some bad ram and the transfer of memory is f'ing it up. Wonder if I should shut down and remove one of the ram chips and see if it goes away and if not then try the other. I'm also working on getting all of my files transferred over to another computer before this thing finally shits the pot. Thanks for your guys input, I've tried to initially post this two or three times and finally got successful. Walt, I really appreciate that. If it turns out I can't get this in the next day or so, it will be o-nighted to you pronto, with a gift certificate for a case of beer and some dough for RockyMountain. I'll have to get all the porn off so you don't think I'm too freaky. Later.

No, the mofo mobo went out on the new mofo Dell my wife had to buy that just sits there. Wonder if I could import a registry file that will "reset" my registry or parts of my registry? How come it happens really quick sometimes and then I can work for a few sometimes? I'm just pissed and confused right now. I kind of agree with what your saying about the Mac stuff and I just don't believe I'd be happy with the program integration. But then, like was said, I'd have one of both. Not a bad thing to consider. {dazed and confused}

Well, I got back on. I think it's a registry thing. And, just for a sidebar, I'm not a total clueless with pc's. I have my services set up for much better performance. I run a full Security setup and a spyware watch and then run a deep scan once a month. It's setup to automatically check for updates and then I run an update check once a week. I keep this thing maintained to a t and it runs great. My kernel is currently set up for memory, and I've got the registry tweaked to perform better. This thing runs way better than my somewhat tweaked 2Gig / 1Gig ram Dell hunk of metal that my wife bought. This thing just locked up on me in Safe mode, then it locked up in the Safe mode menu, before it even started up, so it's got to be in the startup devices, which I just disabled most of the important ones, or in the startup registry, as I have I disabled pretty much everything in the startup console. What I'm afraid of is my stupid spyware watch stuff did not allow a registry modification when I updated Windows late last week. I performed about 3 updates and I'm afraid that the registry didn't update like it was supposed to so it's not all processing correctly. I was going to uninstall all the updates and then reinstall the updates to see if that would correct it, but I haven't been able to get back in. The funny thing is, one time, I'll get on and work for twenty minutes, and the other times, it will lock up halfway through startup. If I reload windows, it will be the third time this year. The last time two times was because of a hard drive error, so it wasn't techically the os's fault. I had a hardrive error, but the first time we didn't catch it, the second time we did, so now I have a new harddrive. But I can't freaking do this anymore. What is this Linux, should I get into it on this machine? I do a lot of drawing, 3-D and blueprint drawing. I need the laptop so I can take it to a customer's house for a presentation or home for late night work. I like this because I can find anything for it. I'm afraid I'd be limited with a Mac. The price isn't a problem, if it's worth it and it will work for me. Sounds like they're pretty fast. The key I'm looking for is stability and no issues. It seems all I do is work on shit around here. It's either the office computer, the home computer, or something with the network needs to be retweaked. I want to open my shit up, work, do what I want and not have a freaking problem, period. It's just so f*^king irritating. Alright, some more input would be great. Thanks for your opinions guys. Nater, you seem to understand what I'm after.

Sounds like they may be lean. If it's getting worse when you lean the airscrew, then it sounds like it's emphasizing the existing condition. Honestly, I don't really know what "cracklin" means? Is it popping or small backfiring? Both of those would lead me to believe it's a little lean at first. Are you having to choke it when it's cold and warm to start it? Later bro.
-
If you lean the oil from the gas/oil mixture, then you will have more fuel in the air/fuel mixture, therefore richening the air/fuel mixture by increasing the amount of combustible fuel in it. make sense?

Any tips on getting the inner axle nut free?
sredish replied to phreak's topic in Banshee Repairs and Mods
if it's the one I'm thinking of (the one that keeps it from sliding through the carrier) then it needs to be heated. it comes from the factory with thread locker. heat it up and it will give. also, an air hammer works wonders. -
I have spend about 6 bones on my present laptop in the last 6 months, getting shit reloaded and fixed up. Well, the other day, it started locking up on startup. If I'm lucky, it will let me get about 5 minutes of work done then lockup, if it's in a bad mood, it will lockup halfway through starting up, not even making it to the logon screen. I do not want to put more money into this freaking thing. It runs very fast and has loads of memory and I really don't think it's out dated yet. 1.7 Ghz, 1 Gig Ram, 15" TFT, ATI 32Mb Video, CD/RW & DVD, 20Gig HD (a little small). No firewire or internal wireless, I've just been using a card, no prob. But if I keeping having problems, I'm gonna put my money to a new system and work on this one myself and maybe save as a backup or just another one on the shelf. (Or maybe sell.) I like the idea of the new ones having internal wireless and bluetooth and firewire (wtf is firewire anyway), but the thing that's really peaked my mind is the idea of the stability of Mac's. I've heard by a lot of people how stable they are, how there's never the kind of problems that Windows has, and the spy and virus crap. The simplicity is another thing I've heard is so nice. I don't see the point of paying another 2 G's for a computer put together just like this with the same files, maybe a touch faster, just doesn't make sense to me. The problem I'm having with this is Mac's are totally uncharted territory for me. I haven't touched one since an Apple II way back in 9th grade. I'm worring about the integration into my network and sharing files with other "windows" computers. I'm also not wanting to replace the important software I have with Mac versions, but if this is possible and the Mac is all they say it is, then I'd consider it. I use Microsoft Visio a lot, I use Quickbooks and often share the Quickbooks file with another. I have a lot of Adobe software that I guess will be no good. I'd have to use another computer to do what I need, or buy the shit again. I would like some opinions from some of you that actually have experience or knowledge on this subject or know people that have dealt with similar experiences. Walt, I'd especially like to hear from you on this. I tried to post this earlier, but she locked up, I'm in safe mode right now. Sorry so long. Later.
