rlg999
Hi Everyone, This is my first post, I've been reading around here for a few weeks, now I think it is time to get my feet wet. I just purchased a 98 shee as a project, everything is just about finished, tors removal, twist grip installed, rejetted, new chain, etc... So far so good, but the shifter doesn't ratchet up and down like it should. I can shift fine, but the shifter doesn't return to center after you shift. Not so much a problem when you're upshifting, gravity takes care of it, but when I down shift, I have to slip my toe under the shifter a hair, then downshift again to get it to go to the next lower gear. It looks like there are two springs associated with the shifter from the parts diagrams I've seen. Is this going to be the spring on the inside near the shift lever or the outside at on the clutch side? Just wanting to know how far I'm gonna have to go when I open her up. I hope it is just the spring, and not the lever or something else broken. I've read about the shift pro mod with the new arm, ball, and spring. Will this kit take care of my problem, or does it sound like something else is broken? Thanks for any input you guys may have. Richard G in North Carolina. Sounds like your shift shaft spring or eccentric stud is broke/missing. You will need to take the clutch cover off and pull the clutch basket off. Then you can access your shift shaft and other shifting components. Sounds like it is a fairly easy fix where you wont have to teardown the whole engine. I will be glad to walk you through it and tell you what your looking for if you want to give me a call.
bansheefreak
do like jeff says tear your clutch side cover off and look in there.. but my guess would be the bolt that is in the shift shaft for the adjustment of the shift star is prolly broke.. it a flat head stud type bolt and goes in between the c of the shift shaft on the clutch side of the motor look there.. it will be pretty much center of the case from looking on the clutch side .. look right on the left side edge of basket right behind there is where its at... baddsheee
I had the same problem and it was the shift shaft spring. Remove clutch cover, clutches with basket and have a look. Pretty simple, even easier if you get a clymer's repair manual.
