grpark20
Here's the story. Currently I'm making my 05 shee dune only. All that's left is motor back from Jeff which is 2-3 weeks out. I will be getting a dirtbike to ride locally in the trails. I'm not a big fan of 2 wheels but I love my street bike...01 GSXR 750 with a few goodies. I can get 2 stroke 125's where I am all day long for $800-$1400. Or I can get a 04 YFZ 250 from my old supervisor. Yes, that is a 4 stroke, but rumor is it's equivalent to a 2 stroke 125. His son pissed him off so he'll let me get it for $1000. Even though I am just going to be in the local trails and not the biggest fan of 2 wheels, I want something that I can man handle but not suck @$$ and lug around. I'm not a prorider, but when my shee had all the possible bolt ons I man handled it...hope that helps with my experience level. I weigh in at 225 if thats a factor for the dirtbike. All my dirtbike friends say the 04 YFZ 250 is a screamn' deal. It's not ragged out, but his son rode the piss out of it..few scratches, needs grips, right peg, rear brake lever. Just serviced and it has a full FMF exhaust with some sort of $500 heavy duty rims and a few other items. All the work and mods are legit being I know this guy and know him personally. Need opinions, help, and advice.
toolman
The 250 sound like a good deal. I'm about the same size and I would buy nothing less than a 250. I ride a CR500.

sled
I would get the 250, better deal and less maintenance. you can lung it more since your a bigger rider. I grew up on a 125 seem to like them better for racing and tight tracks, but you gotta beat the shit outta them to be fast! I LOVE my 450 though, best dirt bike ever IMO. sled
YEA CR 500!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! oh, please. those things are out dated rattle traps that aren't even that fast for 500cc 2 stroke!
locogato11283
oh, please. those things are out dated rattle traps that aren't even that fast for 500cc 2 stroke! please.. cr500 will flat out dust that crf450 you got.. i would stay away from the 125. they are a chore to ride. youd be better off with a 250 2 stroke if you wanna stick with 2 stroke. i would go for the 4 stroke 250. they make good power and are easy to ride. grpark20
Thanks for all the advice and opinions guys. Like I said....this bike will be for local just to give me my fix until the weather gets better and I can get in the sand. I'm leaning towards the 04 YZ 250F 4 stroke. There is less maintenance so thats a plus. Keep the comments coming though.

You like it alot more than the 125 especially for your size, Im only 205 and I liked a 250 4-stroke alot better than the 125. That was stock though. 2slow350
Ok I guess I'm the odd ball. I like the 125 2stroke hands down even tho they may not have the better resale value... I might be bias but if you stroke it more the twice your playing with it  Edited January 18, 2009 by 2slow350
hercalmighty
I like my 125 also. The 250 4strokers are nice but Im a 2stroke guy. Most of these guys are right about ridding a 125. They are more of a pin it and clutch it. The 250 you can ride more with the throttle. I have a YZ125 and love the power it has. I think its alot more linear and usable then the other 125's out there. The 250 is a smoking deal though. Also if you get the 250 get a slipper clutch for it. Especially if your use to 2strokes you are going to want the slipper clutch. I guess my thing is half the fun of owning dirt bikes and quads is working on them and moding them so I like my 2strokes more
RollinRhino
The 250 smoker is the best choice you have. If I was going to stay riding on two wheels I would sell off my 125s and buy a 250, but those days are coming to an end.
