T469
are there any of you that have steps to make a jig for welding the swingarm back together after the cut. i read of ones made of wood and saw mr matts made of steel, which is sweet. i think blue duece posted on how to make one of wood but i searched and couldn't find anything on the making of a jig. any help would be appreciated. mrmatt
Blue, I have read you post this at least 4 times now. I went searching for it a couple months back and couldn't find it either. I think all of your previous descriptions got lost during the last major site change. T469, you're on the right track by using a jig, like Blue said you don't want to be off by even a 1/16" of an inch. It will translate into a significant axle slant, or a quad that runs down the road like a dog. If you are only going to shorten one swingarm, then I suggest using the wood jig like Blue described. A jig doesn't really matter what it is made of, as long as it holds the pieces in the right place. I made mine out of steel because I like to fabricate. Here is how I did it: The base pieces are made of 1/4" steel. On the larger plate I used flat stock and square steel tubing to make supports that bolt to the swingarm pivot tube and shock linkage mount. The swingarm must be parallel to the bottom plate when these are welded on. On the smaller 1/4" steel plate, I used flat stock as supports for the carrier mounting tabs. Then added supports between the flat stock to keep the spacing correct. The first key to my jig is that I had exactly two inches between the two 1/4" plates of steel when I welded all of the mounting tabs on. The next key is that I used 1/2" and 3/4" pipe to keep the two plates in alignment when they are slid together. The 1/2" pipe just barely slides into the 3/4" pipe and they must be parallel for this to work properly. I hope this made sense, just ask for clarification if it didn't. BTY, I will not finish another swingarm like the one that Blue posted. Working with the filler and paint just took too much of my time. Meat
fuckin right thats a nice setup. simple and very effective, thats all ya want in a good jig. Matt, you aughta sell a "guesseted" option. Ya know make up some gussets and brace up the swingarm. I know I cracked the hell out of my stock swingarm. I knew I had some cracks in it, but when I took it off the quad and removed the paint, I found double the cracks. If i remember right, my stock swingarm was cracked at almost every weld. Offer some killer swingarm guesseting work, i'd pay for that. I still have that stock swingarm layin around, I rewelded it and ran it for another year. Meat
i didnt mention that my swingarm was about 14 years old at the time. It was on my old blue '88 Banshee. I got my Janssen swingarm about a year and half ago, so I rode with that beat up stock swingarm for about 2 years before I re welded it up. Those older style axle carriers were a bitch to adjust. The newer style carrier still aint perfect, but its better than that style that I had on the '88.

Meat
dude those quicksand swingarms are so cherry. didnt you have a freind with problems with his QS a-arms ?? Iv only seen one pic of stans arms and I dig em. Id like to see stan build a heavy duty XC swingarm. Something real beefy and robust, all tig welded up and chromoly. nice chrome job on it. make it a shorty -2 and thats a killer swingarm. Stan if you build it, they will come on the axle bearing carrier subject. I *think* it was the 1990 model when they changed the bearing carrier style. I'll try to dig up a picture on the old style carrier. The old style carriers used 4 bolts to mount it to the swingarm instead of the newer style 2 long bolts.
