k_allison510 Posted September 18, 2010 Report Posted September 18, 2010 Ok, so went to our local ride spot this morning and rode a very light trail for about 15 minutes. When I got back to camp I could not get it to go into nuetral. I then realized that it would not go in 1st at all. I can get it to shift into 3rd but when I do, the shift lever does not return to level position. It stays up like when you pull it up to shift. I did not hear or notice anything out of the normal on the ride. No pops or grinding. I can not hear anything rattling around when I role it. Any help on this is greatly apreciated. Thanks. bansheesandrider Posted September 18, 2010 Report Posted September 18, 2010 You need to check your shift shaft, it sounds like the claw on the end of it has gottten wore out and is too sloppy to properly engage the shift star. Quote
AKheathen Posted September 18, 2010 Report Posted September 18, 2010 either the end of the shift shaft, or clutch cover has worn and the claw jumped off the end of the star pegs, or a broken spring or eccentric screw. either way, it would be a problem under your clutch cover. Quote
k_allison510 Posted September 18, 2010 Author Report Posted September 18, 2010 Ok, Thanks for info. I guess I will go pull the clutch cover and go from there. Quote
k_allison510 Posted September 21, 2010 Author Report Posted September 21, 2010 Ok, so I got everything pulled apart today. The claw that engages the shift star was in a little bit of a bind. I pulled on the shift shaft a little and it freed the claw. The spring is still in good condition and everything looks good inside. The only problem is I tried to run it through the gears while everything was still apart. 1st and 2nd went great. It then went into 3rd and then would not up shift any further. I tried spinning the rear wheels and it eventually "clicked" and then would go into 4th but then did same thing all the way to 6th. Looking at the shift star while ddoing this it appeared that it was not engaging the gear enough for the claw to grab the next peg until you spin the hell out of the rear wheels. Is this normal? Thanks again. Also, could you guys recomend the best oil to put back in the gear box. Thanks Quote
AKheathen Posted September 22, 2010 Report Posted September 22, 2010 yes, that is normal. the gears shift to a spot where the dogs don't line up more often than they do line up, so the gears need to spin untill it finds a spot to slide in. just go to a local shop and pick out a good quality oil and stick with it, or run atf if you feel like changing it every 5 hours.
