READING A ALCOHOL PLUG

are you using platinum, iridium or funky plugs to chop with ? they are expensive plugs to tune on.

 

as sav said, cut the threads and check out the lower part of the porcelain.

i couldnt tell you what alky should burn like tho....

alky will be a grey cooler on the plug compared to a gas engine ive herd but i never used it in a engine.

I dont belive you chop the threads off on an Methanol plug. I think you just read the outer metal ring and ground strap to see how the heat has colored it.

Did you purge with that plug?

Also, I like a regular B9, especially for initial tuning. IMHO, you will get a better read on temps/timing with the larger electrode.

clean the end of the plug with some brake cleaner so you can read the heat better. The camera flash is making it hard to read.

This pic will give you a good idea of what you are looking for. You can see where the black is. It is where it has burnt the strap and an ideal plug will have that burn to 3 and 9 o clock on the plug. As you can see, this one is more like 4 and 11 but you get the idea. No need to cut the plug. Unless you are almost too lean, you won't show heat after just one pass. I generally use 3 full throttle runs and then check the plug. If you build heat to 3 and 9 after about 3 runs you are spot on. If you want to hot lap the motor you should prolly richen it up a little from there.
