new to the banshee world... some thoughts and Q's

Well its that time when I get myself a banshee. I have owned almost every other sport quad including YFZ450, Raptor 700, Z400, warrior, blaster, etc.

I dont really care about the MX thing any more, I have two kids and dont want to get hurt. I just want to do some aggressive trail riding, drag racing and duning. Most of my riding will be done in farm lands of Ohio - rolling hills, trails, logging roads, flat flields. I will still hit the occasional MX track, and some trips to silver lake.

I have been doing a ton of searchin on here and all over the web regarding what mods to do when I get a banshee. I have a couple of questions now, so that I know how to weight certain mods while I am shopping.

My goal is to have 80+ HP at the rear wheel. I need to be able to beat a ported sphynx 350R at the very least.

Of course I am thinking ported long rod 4 mil setup, but started thinking that may not be enough. What would be the difference between going with a 4 mil and a 7 mil setup as far as supporting mods goes. Cases would need to be trenched? Could I still run stock (modified) cylinders? Would things like a set of carbs become a requirement? Would your run of the mill FMF/ Pro Circuit pipes become a bottleneck? How much difference is there between the two as far as power goes?

When shopping for domes, at what cylinder bore size are "big bore" domes required?

I would like the engine to still look very much like OEM, so I have some questions regarding a head setup. Can a stock head be modified to have different dome sizes? Would a stock head work with a 7 mil setup? Could I potentially get two stock heads, and have one modified to be a race gas setup, and leave the other one more stock for when I dont want to run race gas, and just swap the heads and replace the gasket? I hear that some say that a modified and fixed up stock head is just as good as a cool head.

I was looking to start things off by getting a billet impeller and billet impeller drive gear from mull engineering. I would also like to get an aftermarket radiator (those $65 ebay ones any good?)

Anyone have any thoughts on Vito's 4 mil kit? http://www.vitosperformance.com/atv_parts/product.php?productid=11502&cat=439&page=1

I guess my ideal setup would be: pipes, +4 timing, at least ported cylinders, the cooling mods I mentioned above, tors removal, pod airfilters, modded head. What HP #'s could I expect out of a setup like that?

When I was in the YFZ450 world, the OEM YZ450F dirt bike clutch was the best there was, the barnett kids, etc were not as good as OEM. Is the same true for banshees? Is there a "ideal" setup for a mild banshee build?

Thanks for any and all input

4 mil would not need the cases trenched. Anything bigger than 4mil will need trenched cases. Stock cylinders will need to be ported for whatever stroke you decide on. If you stay with stock head, it will have to be milled to accept the stroke. i would go with cool head instead of milling two different stock heads. you can reuse the o-rings on cool head and not have to worry about replacing gaskets every time. JMO. Not sure about pipes but maybe cpi or shearer inframes would be nice. 68mm or more is considered big bore. There is a thread that talks about 68mm in a stock style cylinder will choke the transfers and its better to just get stock cylinder (less than 68mm bore) ported for what stroke you want. Not sure if you can get 80+ horses without a drag port on stock cylinders and 4mil or 7mil.  Im sure someone will chime in and let you know what type of set up for stock look would produce those numbers.

Time to open your wallet up. Things are going to get expensive very quickly. Your going to have to think about +4 swingarm at least, stronger chain, sprockets, 4 mil hot rods crank, cylinders, porting of cylinders, possibly bigger carbs, good pipes, a cool head, timing plate and this is just the start. I would pick the mind of a good engine builder and see what he has to say. Better yet I would talk to a few builders that way you don't just get sold on one builders view point. Certain builds are good for a specific type of riding. A cub motor might lack the low end that you want to use for trails, where as a serval might get you what you need as well as the higher hp.  Good luck on the build.

Wow that stealth head is awesome!! I will buy one of those for sure! Will that work with a 4 mil stroker or would I have to get specal domes to put in it?

As far as the sphynx goes.. I am only approx 2 bike lengths behind it on the raptor 700 I have been riding which is all stock except a slip on pipe. i can beat him top speed for sure, but we have to slow down before i can even click 5th and he is already tapped out. (GNCC bike) so i dont know how much of a challenge it will be with a banshee either.

I expect to spend 12-1500 on the motor excluding pipes.I dont plan on doing an extended swinger at all, but A-Arms and shocks all around. The Vito's kit keeps looking better and better. 397cc... they advertise 90HP on race gas, so even if its really only 75-80 that would be perfect.

Forget the Vito's. Go serval. 10 serval on pump gas is making some good numbers close to 100hp and 52trq with the right setup. Even a 4 mil serval would be great. People will figure out that's it not stock after smoking them in a race IMO. Hope you don't have budget... It adds up quick like the others said

I dont really want it to look stock to be a sleeper, I just like the way a lot of the OEM parts look better. Headlights, plastics, hubs, engine side covers, etc. I like the look of an OEM bike with bolt on goodies.

I suppose my budget for an engine excluding pipes and the small stuff would be around $1500.

The serval looks like a good option, I see a few retailers have them but I cant find any info on then on cpindinc.com

What is a good price to pay for a welded and trued + 4 mil crank?

Then I could just send my cylinders and head to LED to have them modified and ported for the 4 mil, and find a set of pistons somewhere. 795's still the best option to run?

GOOD crank? That'll be 4-450. I've got my last one for 425 from fast. Cody welded it and pressed the max loads on at that price. The bearings I had to pay for but he did the press for nothing.

Most certainly you could have your stock stuff done by Arlen at LED. Arlen = bad ass

Is the stuff from motorcityatv any good?

Could Arlen port a serval and get more power out of it?

How much power is there to be gained from a 4 mil setup running lets say 22cc domes on pump vs 18 or 19cc domes on race gas?

motorcityatv= FUCK NO! ive read many times on here about the notorious rattlecanray and his b.s. ive never dealt with it, but just 3 days ago a friend of mine came over with a stock head he bought from there online. mint, and no pitting is what it was listed as, and doesn't even look like the pic man. may he have some good stuff maybe, but why even put money into the pocket of a low life like him! look through reviews on here, bet you change your mind real quick. matter of fact im going to text my buddy and talk shit to him about it now. always research reviews man. by the way I bought a vitos crank like that 7 months ago it was like 430 bucks if I remember right, and that's from vitos performance. not a 600 dollar crank, maybe they call him rattlecanray because hes huffing spraypaint!

I was gonna make a joke about all the weird shit Arlen could port, but they all seemed to involve him doing weird thing with his tool.

Any way..... YES. Arlen could hook your serval up. He has been doing a lot with CP cylinders. I've yet to see what his servals are doing, but the puma 250r and 7mm stock cyl banshee I rode were disgusting!

Redline has been doing the best servals I've seen posted to date though. I've seen servals with higher peak, but they were ported to near cub durations and no longer quite as torquey. Cam is has managed to get a gain from top to bottom. Un heard of years ago, but with modern cylinder design and R&D talent, these banshees are getting exponentially more bad ass every season.
