Help with jetting?

Recommended Posts

Hi All

This is my first post here. So first off Hello from Northern Ireland! I bought a 2003 Banshee last April and ran it all over the summer. It then went into the garage over the winter. The quad ran great the whole summer, well I thought it ran great but then again this is my first quad and first two stroke.

So the whole summer the quad started first or second kick from cold but always seemed to smoke more from the left exhaust than the right. As the quad was being stored away over the winter I thought this the best opportunity to take some parts off and clean them, the carbs being the main ones.

While I had the carbs, reeds and exhausts off I was able to look up into the cylinders and noticed the right piston had a small part broke off. I believe this may have been part of the reason why the left cylinder wouldn’t have been smoking as much? Possibly lower in compression?

So I have pulled the cylinders off and there is part of the piston and ring broke off, I am hoping these have went out the exhaust port and not down into the crankcase. The pistons that were in the quad were Pro X .50 oversized. I have the cylinders away getting re-bored out and new pistons.

The quad is completely stock apart from the tailpipes. There is the stock fat part of the exhaust but seems to be some sort of aftermarket silencers on the back. There is no make or model number on them. Just blue tailpipes. Everything else is stock.

My question is, the carbs had a 200 main jet and a 25 pilot jet and the air screw was 4 turns out. My elevation is between 50ft and 300ft above sea level and my riding temperatures vary between 50 – 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Does the jetting sound right on the quad?

I run the quad on normal 95 octane unleaded fuel with a 32:1 mix with Castrol Power 2T Racing.

While the cylinders have been away I have got a compression tester and made a leak down tester (thanks to guide on this site) and will test these when I reassemble the quad.

Like I said this is my first 2 stroke so any help will be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Jetting sounds right if the quad is completely stock with pipes. You need to do a plug chop to know for sure. There a tread about reading plugs and jetting correctly. Since you have the cylinders off I would stick a magnet in the crank case to see if you have any metal pieces from the piston in there. We are the same elevation. My build is not to extreme. I think you should do what I did. Get new toomy t5 or t6 pipes and k&n filter set up. V2 or v4 reeds. Get you cylinders bored to the next size up and a port job. I sent mine to F.A.S.T.. Take the stock head to a machine shop and have them cut .030 to .035 off to raise compression a little. I would say buy a cool head with interchangeable domes but there's no need if you don't plan on running race gas to be honest. USE Wiseco pistons. I'd also put new wrist pin bearings and wrist pins in also just because. Get a adjustable stator and go +4 degrees timing. Start with a 330 main cause that's what I have in mine now. It a little rich but not by much. That's what I'd do. I love my shee. She's not the fastest for sure but for all around performance it's definitely perfect.

Yea I have been readin this site quite a bit over the winter so have a list of all these things to do when I get it runnin again, leak down test, compression test, plug chop to see how my jettin is. Just wanted some of u guys advice to see if it was anywhere close.

Good idea with the magnet in the crankcase. I have the gear oil drained and clutch cover off to check the water pump as I know they are common to fail.

I have plans to do a lot to mine but the summer is creepin up already so just want to get it running again to get out on it!

It took me three weeks to get everything I mentioned done. Porting and boring was the most of my down time. 2 stroke are very easy to rebuild. I just did a vito billet water impeller and over sized radiator. My stock impeller was in very good shape. The plastic seemed very durable. Kinda hard to believe they melt and break from what guys say on here. I did it just because. You would cook the motor before that even started to melt but the upgraded one seems to have a better flow design. I got a new bearing and seal for it also. Yea summer is around the corner man but you got time bro. I'd do it now. This way you got a nice reliable shee and with some balls. I beat a brand new trx450 with that hrc kit - cams blah blah. I was pulling on him. I had my paddles on hehe! Lol. Good luck with the build
