Banshee barn find help with 2 known issues

Recommended Posts

I have a friend who's brother purchased a banshee, I believe it's an 01 to 03, it's white with black and red seat, black tank cover if that helps. Anyway, I looked at the quad years ago, he rode it very little, too fast for him and it developed a spark issue. When we purchased it, he had a vforce reed cage and a bottle behind the carbs from the dealer, only mods I know of. After years of getting on him, he gave the quad to me. It's all original, with the exception of the mods listed above right down to all the stickers, tires, chain and sprockets, I mean everything, it was filthy from sitting half covered in a barn on blocks, but I washed it up, spent 5 hours cleaning and everything shines like new. Issues are first, his spark problem. After reading, probably the tors system, I didn't look at that much, radiator and fluids are surprisingly clean, and I pulled the stator cover, looks like new inside, my guess is the quad has maybe 15 total hours on it. Second issue, I can't chase the spark issue down because from sitting, it's locked, my guess is pistons, so I put some small bottles of 2 stroke oil down the spark plug holes and some wd40 Teflon rust inhibitor and I'm gonna let it sit. My questions are as follows

Is there a better way to try to free up the motor?

Should I take it to a shop and pull it apart? I live in Michigan, anyone with an idea where I can take it in the state would be great.

Is it worth fixing? Complete rebuild cost? I want to keep it stock period

Anything else I should be looking for in the problems area?

I bought the bike because a few years back my son and I rode, but I developed a neurological nervous system disease, it's not going to go away, and I have gotten him a quad to replace the one we sold due to having to leave my job after 20 years. I just looking to take the probably 2 years I have good left and create some smiles, he loved riding with me, and for the price, I can't beat the bike, after a good cleaning and polishing everything up, it looks new, you can actually see the chalk marks on the front tires still. So any help to chase the spark down, ideas on the motor, and anything else would be greatly appreciated, everything else looks great, brakes, shocks, Trans shifts, nothing is froze up, just the 2 issues I mentioned. I did mess with it a few years back and the motor was free and I know they did about a year or so back but it's been sitting since I would say to be safe 2006 or so. I don't have an Internet connection unless I hit the library or McDonald's or open wifi, so I would be open to calls, or text messages at 810 937 6202 9f someone is willing to help me, I don't have a lot of time to try to get this together and going, I'm afraid I'm on a time schedule unfortunately and it's getting nice, and I'm looking one nice day at a time with him about the best I can manage at this point. Thank you for any help anyone can provide. Trust me, his smiles mean EVERYTHING to me at this point.

Yeah I am time crunch is simply health and when it starts to decline, it doesn't stop, I could probably chase the spark issue but impossible with what I believe the pistons being locked, I'll leave it sit for a few days and see what happens. And wait for some advise if someone has some.

I looked through the airbox, the complete wiring harness, plugs, and everything I could see with the plastic off, looked inside the airbox, and everywhere I could see, no evidence of chewing or rodents as of yet. Like I said the quad still shows signs of chalk marks on the tires, all stickers are in tact, and there is not even paint worn off the a arms or bumper, looks almost showroom new. I know the fluids will need changing, but the crank case oil and radiator fluid looked surprisingly clean. I'm sure the cylinders are rusted up, hopefully putting some oil down them and some Teflon rust inhibitor will free them up, then I'll pull the pipes and clean them out of excess oil and whatever else I find. I'm looking for a shop today that will pull the top end apart and clean and sync the carbs and clean them. I did turn both and pull the bowls, they again are surprisingly clean. It was at my house probably 5 or 6 years back when the spark issue happened, but I didn't put a ton of time into the issue, he showed little or no interest in the quad let alone if it ran or not. But yeah main issue is getting the pistons freed up so I can start with the tors unit, I'm almost positive that's where it's at, but hard to do anything with the probable piston issue. Is there an easier way to free up the pistons? Something else I can spray or add to help get it to roll over? That's really my only concern. I remember running a compression test on it when it quit and both cylinders were at about 130 or so on the tester, it didn't have but probably 10 or 15 hours on it tops when it quit. But obviously it'll need a rebuild due to the rust unless someone can enlighten me otherwise.

Pull the head. Use a rubber mallet to tap the piston. Just Tap! Any hard force can snap the ring lands or crown edge of the piston off. If you and get it free, but new rings and hone the cylinders.

Spark, is it just weak or non existent?

If it were me, I would leakdown test motor first thing, with the crank seals having no lubrication for this long it's likely they have dry rotted, if leak down passed, As Tricked said, pull head and cylinders and get a good look at the crank, hone and re-ring and go from there

I would like to personally thank John, goes or posts under the name Larry's Shed. He has been great to deal with, communicate with and the Banshee has been taken there. My health is not getting better but I hope to get a small portion of summer and fall with my little guy to create some much needed memories since we rode together daily since the time he was smal enough to ride around the yard with me until we we're forced to sell his race quad a little over 2 years ago and our complete collection of bikes which everyone in the family did together. Hopefully due to the limited hours and in looking at the cleanliness of the machine and inside the stator cover fluids...ect it's a top end and some adjustments. Then as I can no longer ride the bike will be given/donated back to John or someone in his family because of what he is doing... Helping and giving me a little opportunity to get unplugged with my son for what it is. Anyone who needs input, or just a general all around great guy for advise, look no further than John... Nothing short or a stand up guy ... Kinda a god send to my son and I. Thank you to the rest of you also for the responses and advise it means more than you know.

Guess I should update this for Motoman.

First off, this thing is in excellent condition, other than paint off lower front a arms it isn't even worn from boots or such.

Started with leak test because of concern that crank seals might be dried out. After replacing the carb and crossover clamps with screw clamps because they wouldn't seal, the fucking boost bottle itself was leaking at the end. Okay, swap that out with welde unit, all is good now.

Smoked a cigarette, started pulling hoses, 26 minutes later hadn't lost an ounce. Actually didn't lose pressure until I started removing head nuts.

When installing the caps for test, the left piston had rust stain on it. OK, not good, but maybe not end of world. Pulled head, not pretty, pretty heavy rust (relative).

Used a harmonic balancer puller to lift cylinder off piston. Didn't get easy until almost all the way off.

Piston and rod were standing up like a wedding dick !! And crank still won't turn, and never will again !! No clue how it could have rusted that bad.

Pull the head. Use a rubber mallet to tap the piston. Just Tap! Any hard force can snap the ring lands or crown edge of the piston off. If you and get it free, but new rings and hone the cylinders.

Spark, is it just weak or non existent?

Don't think even a BMFH would have helped, lol.

I just want to add a reply, update to the project. The quad is being picked up today, John is an EXCELLENT GUY and and excellent wrench, his communication is second to none, his attention to detail is second to none, and if anybody in the Michigan or surrounding areas needs advise, work, or whatever, I highly recommend him. He takes the time to do things right, has great attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and is just a all around good guy to just shoot the shit with. Should be completely finished today, bumper, pro peg nerfs, a arms swingarm, elka long travel suspension, vipers and a host or other small things, I will post pictures when complete. I may have a shortened life expectancy but my excitement along with my boys, wife and friends are priceless. Probably not a person I didn't grow up with, raced with, rode with back so far that they still came with 3 wheels that isn't going to be involved in finishing it today and be riding tomorrow as much as possible. I would also like to thank everyone who has responded to my questions, concerns and for advise, it was and is very much appreciated, may be my last ride, but I can't say that through my career in racing, riding even in the local pits in the area that this isn't gonna mean the most for sure. Again, thank you to John, his family, Lakes Power sports z and everyone. I'm already smiling and I have a long drive there and back before we finish the rest.

Motoman that's good to hear. I'm sorry to hear you're ill, and have limited time. Sounds like you have it together though. Ride the living fuck out of that thing!
